Foster 2, Port Angeles 1 (PK’s 4-3)
TACOMA — The Roughriders season came to a close with a loser-out district playoff loss to the Foster Bulldogs.
Port Angeles allowed an early goal in the ninth minute of Thursday’s match after a defensive miscue.
“Foster held off [our] pressure until the final moments of regulation time when Kenny Soule took a long throw-in and Miki Andrus was able to head in a loose ball with less than a minute left,” Riders coach Chris Saari said.
The teams went to sudden death overtime, in which Port Angeles put pressure on the Bulldog defense.
Angel Rivero hit a full volley on target in the first overtime that was kick-saved by Foster goalkeeper Alex Lepe.
Tim Schneider hit the post with a shot, only to have Lepe clean up the rebound.
The match went to a penalty kick shootout and the Riders missed one kick wide and Lepe saved another attempt.
Port Angeles’ freshman goalkeeper Keenan Leslie saved one kick, but Foster made its other four attempts.
“It was a tough way to end the season, in penalty kicks,” Saari said.
“[We] made a great effort to rally and tie the game in the dying moments of regulation but were unable to capitalize on opportunities in sudden death.”
The Riders finished the season 11-6, placed third in the Olympic League, recorded the school’s first-ever win against Kingston and split two league games with Sequim (Port Angeles was 2-1 overall against the Wolves this season).
“[We] lose some very strong seniors in Miki Andrus, Tim Schneider, Angel Rivero [an exchange student from Mexico], Vincent Ioffrida and Matt Sousa [an exchange student from Brazil].
“We had a special group of kids, and it’s disappointing to have the season come to an end when we were so close to moving on.
“Foster did well to capitalize on their opportunities and their goalkeeper made a big save in penalty kicks to advance them to the next round.” Saari selected Andrus and Soule as his offensive and transition players of the match, respectively.
