PORT ANGELES — Laura DeMichelli and Sophie Thurston each won her third singles match of the season to lead the combined Chimacum and Port Townsend girls tennis team to a 4-3 win at Port Angeles.

Chimacum/Port Townsend swept the three singles matches and claimed the No. 1 doubles showdown in Wednesday’s victory.

DeMichelli defeated Jessica Zhu in the No. 1 singles match 6-4, 6-4.

DeMichelli, one of three Port Townsend players on the team, is a transfer student from Brazil.

“She came to the team playing pretty good tennis,” Chimacum/Port Townsend coach Laurie Olafson said.

Chimacum’s Thurston defeated Emily Basden in No. 2 singles 6-4, 6-3.

Port Townsend’s Casi Rowland won the third singles match against Lum Fu 6-2, 6-1.

Chimacum duo Ray Maki and Sarah Allen took the No. 1 doubles match 6-2, 6-4.

The Roughriders took the other three doubles matches, including a tightly contested No. 2 doubles showdown in which Audrey Little and Karina Paup-Byrnes outlasted Cowboys duo Holly Taylor and Alyssa Wolfe 7-6 (7-5), 2-6, 6-4.

“That was fun to watch,” Olafson said.

Maria Soule and Maddy Woods defeated Makenzie Richey and Chloe Patterson in No. 3 doubles 6-2, 6-3.

In the fourth doubles match, Emily Traughber and Nakita Jones defeated Port Townsend’s Amelia Breithaupt and Chimacum’s Gladys Hitt 6-2, 6-2.

Port Angeles (1-4) plays its third match in three days at home against Bremerton (5-2) this afternoon. The Knights are tied with Kingston for second place in the Olympic League behind undefeated North Kitsap.

Chimacum/Port Townsend (2-3) has its first meeting of the season with Coupeville (2-3) today in Coupeville.

The Cowboys and Redhawks, who wear uniforms representing their respective schools, will play together as one team until the Olympic League 1A tournament in Port Townsend next month.

KINGSTON — The Roughriders were on the losing end of a walk-off, a day after winning a thriller in the same fashion against North Kitsap.

The Buccaneers scored on a bases-loaded infield single with two outs in the seventh inning to hand Port Angeles its first Olympic League 2A loss of the season Tuesday.

“We talked about it, how it’s easy to have a little letdown after a big win,” Riders coach Vic Reykdal said.

“I don’t necessarily think the kids were over-confident. We just didn’t hit the ball. It was just one of those days. We just couldn’t seem to make contact.

“That’s baseball: you can’t hit sometimes.”

Each team was held to four hits.

Curan Bradley pitched four innings for Port Angeles and allowed one hit while striking out three.

Ryan Rodocker took the loss after allowing the winning run.

Kingston’s Miles Sustad struck out two and walked only two to earn the win.

Jace Bohman doubled for the Riders and Tanner Gochnour, Travis Paytner and Ricky Crawford each singled.

“The high of the North [Kitsap] win was short-lived,” Reykdal said.

“Maybe that’s good, though.”

Port Angeles (4-1, 5-3) travels to face Shelton (7-6) on Saturday. With that being the Riders’ fourth game in five days, Reykdal plans on using his bench for most of the game.
