CHIMACUM — Chimacum pounded out 11 runs in the first inning and seven more in the second to take down rival Port Townsend 19-1 in an Olympic League 1A Division softball game.
“Bradyn Nelson had a nice triple for us and Shanya Nisbet hit a two-run triple off the fence,” Cowboys coach Jim Eldridge said.
“If the wind was blowing out it would have been a homer for us.”
Eldridge said Chimacum’s offensive attack was aided by a number of walks allowed by the Redhawks.
Cowboys pitcher Holly Snyder avoided that problem, according to Eldridge.
“Holly Snyder pitched four innings and she got some strikeouts and didn’t give up too many walks,” Eldridge said.
“Shanya Nisbet pitched the last inning, she had never really pitched before, so we got her some time.“
Chimacum has now beaten Port Townsend by a combined score of 39-1 in two games this season.
The Cowboys and Redhawks will play again Monday, May 1.
Chimacum (2-0, 3-1) visited Coupeville (2-0, 7-0) in a first-place showdown late Wednesday.
“We’ve played some of the same teams and our scores are real similar,” Eldridge said. “We beat Klahowya by one, so did they. We beat South Whidbey by four, they beat them by one, so it should be a pretty even game.”
Baseball Sequim 10, Bainbridge 9
SEQUIM — Sequim gave up six runs in the first two innings against Bainbridge, but the Wolves got a great pitching performance from James Thayer and rallied to come from behind in a 10-9 nonleague win.
Relief pitchers Thayer and Austin Hilliard clamped down on the Spartans over the final three innings Tuesday, not allowing a run. Thayer struck out seven batters in just 2 2/3 innings, picking up the win.
Starter James Grubb had some bad luck on the mound, giving up nine runs in four innings, with only four of them earned.
Bainbridge got up 6-2 in the second inning, but then the Wolves rallied for five runs in the bottom of the second.
The Spartans retook the lead 9-7 with three runs in the fourth, but Sequim came back a second time, scoring two runs in the fourth to tie it and one in the fifth to take a lead. Then Thayer and Hilliard shut down the Spartans the rest of the way.
Hilliard went 2 for 2, drove in three runs and stole three bases while Grubb had a double, two runs scored and two RBIs. Justin Porter and Gavin Velarde each had two hits.
The Wolves (2-3, 5-4) host Olympic at 4:15 p.m. today.
Boys Soccer Sequim 1, Bremerton 0
SEQUIM — An own goal by the Knights in the 62nd minute boosted the Wolves in an important Olympic League 2A Division contest.
The Wolves (3-3, 4-3-2) stayed in fourth place in league play with the win, a game ahead of Bremerton (2-4, 3-5-0) and a game behind Port Angeles (4-2, 6-3-0).
“We had a shot that came back out and we pushed it wide to Evan James who knocked it over to Ryan Tolbert,” Wolves coach Dave Brasher said.
“Ryan sent in a nice cross and there were a couple of guys battling for it and a Bremerton guy knocked it in the 62nd minute.”
Brasher selected Brandon Benson as the team’s man of the match.
“[It was] his first game back after a slight concussion against Port Angeles and he held down the middle real well for us,” Brasher said.
“Navy Thomas-Brenske and Nick Janikic had the shutout for us. They split halves in goal.”
North Kitsap 2, Port Angeles 1
POULSBO — The Roughriders played the first-place and undefeated Vikings tough, taking a 1-1 tie into the 73rd minute, but a late goal after a restart cost them in a close loss.
The Riders’ Ben Schneider continued his recent hot streak, scoring a goal in the 11th minute after he stole a ball near midfield and hit a 30-yard shot that caught the North Kitsap goalie Jordan Thompson off the line, according to coach Chris Saari.
“Ben’s goal was an incredible long range shot,” Saari said. It was Schneider’s sixth goal in his past five matches.
The Vikings responded with a goal on a header by Ryan Nelson in the 20th minute and the score remained 1-1 late into the game.
North Kitsap got the go ahead goal in the 73rd minute on a controversial restart after an injury.
Port Angeles visits Coupeville on Friday.
