CHIMACUM — The Chimacum boys basketball team took over first place in the Olympic League 1A standings with a 68-54 win over Klahowya.
The Cowboys continued their bad habit of starting slow, and even trailed the Eagles 27-24 at halftime.
But a solid third quarter at both ends of the floor turned a three-point deficit into a 12-point lead going into the final period.
Chiamcum outscored Klahowya 21-6 in the third.
“We came out in the third quarter and we got more aggressive on offense and started attacking them instead of being tentative,” Chimacum coach Jim Eldridge said of Friday’s game.
“And our defense shut them down. They only had one 3-pointer and three free throws in the third.”
John Carthum led Chimacum with 18 points, including three 3-pointers.
His success from long-range helped open up the middle for bigs Orion Weller, who had 14 points, and Brendon Naylor, who scored 12.
“Our big advantage is our height, and Klahowya couldn’t stop those guys,” Eldridge said.
“If we’re shooting well, it really puts the other team in a tough spot.”
Matthew Koenig added nine points for the Cowboys.
Klahowya’s Ricky Holguin led all scorers with 24 points.
The win moves Chimacum to 2-0 in league play (3-8 overall).
The Cowboys own wins over Port Townsend (1-1, 1-8) and Klahowya (1-1, 2-9). They face Coupeville (0-2, 3-7) for the first time Friday at Coupeville.
But first is a home matchup with North Olympic Peninsula foe Sequim (3-2 Olympic League 2A, 7-5 overall) on Wednesday.

EATONVILLE — The Spartans made their first long trip to face the Cruisers, newcomers to the Evergreen League, and found a similar result to their matchup a week earlier at Forks High School, though Forks coach Rick Gooding said that Friday’s game was closer than the final score indicates.
The Spartans were clawing their way back into the game when Eatonville’s Wyatt Coleman hit back-to-back 3-pointers that crushed Forks’ rally.
Colton Raben led the Spartans with 22 points, 10 of those coming in the first half.
“We really relied on Colton in the first half and throughout the rest of the game,” Gooding said.
As good as he is, that’s a lot to ask of one kid.”
Parker Browning added 16 for Forks.
The Spartans (0-7, 1-9) host Montesano (2-4, 5-6) on Tuesday.

PORT ANGELES — The Roughriders surged past the Knights in an Olympic League meet at William Shore Memorial Pool.
Port Angeles achieved three individual state-qualifying times and five district-qualifying times at Thursday’s meet.
The Riders (4-0, 4-0) placed first in nine of the 12 events and outscored the Knights in 11 of the 12 events.
“The challenge of having two meets in one week was met with poised determination,” Port Angeles coach Rich Butler said.
John Macias had two of the state-level times while winning the 200-yard freestyle and the 100-yard breastroke.
Jay Liang also qualified for state with a victory in the 200 individual medley.
Liang also qualified for districts with a win in the 500 free.
Kaleb Sheldon achieved district times by winning the 100 backstroke and finishing third in the 200 free.
Wei-Yan Fu was second and Natah Beirne third for the Riders to qualify for districts in the 500 free.
Milo Atwater also had a district qualifying time and took second in the 100 breast.
Other individual event winners for Port Angeles were Karsten Hertzog in the 50 free, Tristin Butler in the 100 butterfly, and Scott Methner in the 1-meter dive with a score of 181.35 points.
The Riders also won two relays: the 200 free relay with Butler, Hertzog, Kody Kuch and Nathan Bock, and the 400 with Hertzog, Kuch, Fu and Dario Andereozzi.
Crescent High School swimmer Patrick Singhose swam the 50 free in a time of 25.78 second and the 100 breast in a time of 1:20.46.
Port Angeles swims against Kingston at the North Kitsap pool in Poulsbo on Thursday.

SILVERDALE — The Riders (3-0, 8-0) stayed unbeaten on the season with a road win against the Eagles.
Five Port Angeles grapplers won by pin in Thursday’s match: Nate Harrelson in the 106-pound class, Cody Anderson (120 pounds), Brady Anderson (126), Sam Burton (138) and Roberto Colonel (285).
Winners by decision were Tyler Gale (113 pounds), Gavin Crain (132) and Matt Robbins with a major decision win at 220 pounds.
Terry Spencer earned a forfeit victory at 195.
Port Angeles wrestles a double dual with Sequim and Port Townsend at Port Townsend on Tuesday.

PORT ANGELES — Kaitlyn Jackson bowled games of 145 and 161 to earn the highest two-game average in the Wolves’ win.
Dakota Henderson was next up for Sequim after rolling games of 118 and 155.
Tenille Tosland was steady with games of 105 and 107 for the Wolves (4-6).
