Wolves split at Klahowya
SILVERDALE — Sequim girls soccer and volleyball split contests in a trip to Klahowya, with the Wolves falling 2-0 to Klahowya on the field and sweeping the Eagles on the court, 3-0.
For the Sequim soccer team, the final result, which came after Klahowya notched back-to-back goals in the 30th and 31st minutes, was overshadowed by the opportunity to enjoy their first match since November 2019.
“Being able to play last night, I know there were a lot of nerves among the JV and varsity, but everybody came away happy and having had fun,” Wolves coach Derek Vander Velde said.
“The girls weren’t disappointed at all. They knew they played a good game.”
Vander Velde said junior Bailey Geniesse shined in her debut.
“I think Bailey Geniesse, a junior who is new to the program this year, she played outstanding at outside back,” he said.
“We had two shots off the crossbar — [the best] chance off a free kick taken by Olivia Hare that Hannah Wagner got a head on, but it hit the bar. And we had another couple of shots that were on frame, but their keeper was able to get there.
“Overall, it was just a positive experience for everybody, and I’m impressed by their ability and play.
Sequim claimed the volleyball match 25-12, 25-14, 26-24.
Solid serving helped the Wolves to the win as the team only missed four serves on the night.
“The girls are thrilled to be playing, it’s the other stuff that’s more of a challenge,” Sequim coach Jennie Webber Heilman said.
“We were actually down by seven points right off the bat in the third set, but managed to catch up and win.” Jayla Julmist had 13 kills and three stuff blocks in her return after not playing volleyball as a junior.
“It’s nice to have her back,” Webber Heilman said.
Kalli Wiker served 15 of 15 with two aces at setter with 21 assists and six digs. Amanda Weller served perfectly 18 of 18 with an ace, six digs and four kills.
McKenna Hastings had two kills, five digs and served 12 of 12 with an ace.
“Serving 95 percent is pretty good for the beginning of the season,”Webber Heilman said.
Kendall Hastings added seven kills and two stuff blocks, while Jordan Hegtvedt served 8 for 8.
Sequim (1-0) visits Olympic on Wednesday.
PA-East Jefferson cross country
PORT TOWNSEND — East Jefferson junior Max Allworth-Miles edged Port Angeles sophomore Jack Gladfelter for the individual win in the boys race by just less than a second, but the Roughriders triumphed 21-40.
Allworth-Miles finished the 2-mile race around Port Townsend Golf Club in a time of 10 minutes, 52.8 seconds to Gladfelter’s 10:53.7.
Port Angeles coach Rodger Johnson said Gladfelter led the first 1.8 miles of the race, but was overtaken by Max Allworth-Miles of Port Townsend in the final stretch.
“I could feel him behind me the whole race and knew he would make a move at the end. I just couldn’t hold him off today,” Gladfelter said.
Port Angeles’ Naaman McGuffey (11:19.1), Maxwell Baeder (11:27) and Langdon Larson (11.31) rounded out the top five.
In the girls race, Riders’ senior Lauren Larson (12:02) bested East Jefferson freshman Fiona Fraser (14.16.7).
Port Angeles didn’t have enough runners for a team score, so Port Townsend won the team event.
Port Angeles’ Jenna McGoff was third (15:38.5), and Emma Weaver was fourth (16:28.1).
Sylvia Butterfield was fifth for East Jefferson in 16:56.5.
“The girls team beat PA and looks to be stronger at the next meet when two athletes who were unable to compete this week return to competition,” East Jefferson coach Alice Fraser said.
“This was our second 2-mile race of the season and almost everyone improved their time over the first race,” Johnson said. “I was really impressed with the boys, as this course had more elevation change and turns. Everyone is healthy and getting back on pace.”
