PREP SOFTBALL: Sequim bats blister Buccaneers

Julmist smashes 3-run homer; Lopez hits 3 doubles, triple

SEQUIM — Jayla Julmist smashed a three-run home run into a fierce wind, and Kailyn Lopez totaled four extra-base hits as Sequim overpowered Kingston 19-3 in the softball season opener for each team.

“They did really good; we hit the ball well and played some good defense,” Wolves coach Mike McFarlen said.

“It didn’t rain, but the wind was blowing in, and it was freezing.”

Julmist’s homer came early in the game.

“Jayla Julmist hit a home run into that wind,” McFarlen said. “It was a bomb; she crushed it. That kind of broke the game open; the floodgates kind of opened up after that.”

Lopez added three doubles and a triple.

“She stroked it,” McFarlen said.

Sophomore pitcher Lainy Vig went five innings and struck out nine to earn the win.

“She threw a lot of strikes, which is a good thing because we aren’t overpowering in pitching,” McFarlen said.

Sequim (1-0) will play Olympic and Klahowya on the road Saturday before returning home to face rival Port Angeles at 4:15 p.m. Tuesday.
