PREP SOFTBALL: Roughriders’ Smithson named league MVP

SEQUIM — Port Angeles’ Zoe Smithson was named the Olympic League softball MVP and several of her Roughriders teammates and Sequim players made the all-league first and second teams.

Port Angeles and Sequim had a total of 15 players named to the first and second teams.

Smithson, a senior catcher for the Roughriders who was also the 2021 league MVP, is wrapping up her prep career this weekend at the 2A state tournament. She helped lead the Riders to the Olympic League title and is headed to Pacific Lutheran next year to play softball.

Joining her on the first team is Port Angeles pitcher Teagan Clark, infielders Natalie Robinson and Peyton Rudd and outfielder Lily Halberg.

Sequim, which is also at the 2A state tournament, players making the first team include catcher Christy Grubb, infielders Addie Smith and outfielders Hannah Bates and Lily Fili.

Making the second team were Port Angeles infielder Taylor Worthington and outfielder Heidi Leitz, who is the only area freshman named. Sequim players on the second team include pitcher Angel Wagner, infielder Taylee Rome and outfielders Mia Pozernick and Katelyn Glass.

Sportsmanship winners were Port Angeles’ Emi Halberg and Sequim’s Sammie Bacon.
