PREP SOFTBALL: Quilcene cruises past Tacoma Baptist

QUILCENE — Nine Quilcene Rangers contributed hits in the softball team’s 15-5 five-inning victory over Tacoma Baptist.

Runs came in threes — or in one case, multiples of threes — for Class 1B Quilcene in Friday’s win over the Crusaders, a 2B team. The Rangers scored three in the first, three in the second, three in the third and six in the fourth to build a 15-0 advantage heading into the fifth inning.

Katie Bailey cleaned up the bases in the first two innings. Her triple scored two runs in the first inning, and her single in the second inning brought in two more.

“Katie has worked hard on her approach, and has taken a liking to the No. 4 spot in our order,” Quilcene coach Mark Thompson said.

“She is having a really good season so far.”

Megan Weller added a two-run double in the third, and several players contributed to the six-run fourth inning.

Bailey Kieffer had another strong pitching outing for the Rangers, going 4 2/3 innings and striking out 11.

Weller gave up five runs in a rare pitching appearance.

“Megan is a good pitcher, she just hasn’t pitched in a while,” Thompson said.

“She has had a lot of success in the circle over the years, and if we ever need her I know I can count on her.”

Tacoma Baptist (3-4) entered Friday’s game on a three-game winning streak.

“This was a good win for us,” Thompson said.

“It gives us some momentum going into next week’s league contests.”

The Rangers (1-0, 4-1) get back to SeaTac League play Monday at home against Evergreen Lutheran (0-1, 1-2) and then play at Rainier Christian (2-1, 2-1) on Thursday.
