Forks sweeps to win share of Pacific 2B title

PORT ANGELES — The Port Angeles softball team got great pitching performances from Heidi Leitz and Cheyenne Zimmer and big hits from Abby Kimball and Kennedy Rognlien in a 5-2 win over Kingston that keeps the Roughriders in position for second place in the Olympic League.

Zimmer and Leitz combined to allow just three hits. Zimmer started and went four innings to pick up the win, allowing three hits and two earned runs while striking out six. Leitz picked up the save, going three innings and allowing no hits. She struck out one.

It was a pitchers’ duel between Zimmer and Leitz and Kingston’s Kiera Chausee, who allowed just five hits. She also hit a home run for the Buccaneers.

Kimball had a bases-loaded pop double in the third inning to score three runs, and Rognlien added a solo home run and an RBI single. Natalie Robinson had a hit, a run scored and a walk, while Zimmer had a hit.

The Riders also had a good game defensively with no errors.

The victory puts the Riders at 9-3 in league (14-3 overall) with games left today versus first-place and undefeated North Kitsap (12-0, 15-0) at 4:15 p.m. today at Dry Creek Elementary. The Vikings beat the Riders 7-4 earlier this season in Poulsbo. Port Angeles then wraps up with another huge game against Sequim (9-4, 9-6) at 4:15 p.m. Friday at Dry Creek.

Sequim is just a half-game behind, tied for third with Olympic. The Wolves beat the Riders 7-6 earlier this season in Sequim.

SOUTH BEND — The Forks softball team swept South Bend on Tuesday to lock up a co-championship of the Pacific 2B League.

The Spartans won 8-4 and 6-5 on a walk-off hit from Lizzy Soto, who had a huge day in both games.

In the 6-5 win, South Bend got up 5-1, but Forks rallied with four runs in the sixth inning to tie the game. In the seventh, South Bend was one out away from forcing extra innings when Keira Johnson hit a two-out double. Soto ended the game with an RBI single, bringing Johnson in to score.

Soto finished the game 3-for-4 with two doubles and two RBIs. Kyra Neel had a home run, two runs scored, two walks and an RBI. Johnson scored two runs and Haven Hoffman hit a double.

Soto went the distance on the rubber, allowing six hits and just one earned run. She struck out two.

In the 8-4 victory, the Spartans collected 13 hits. Soto was again 3-for-4, a run scored and an RBI. Kyra Wood was 2-for-5 with a run scored and an RBI, while Johnson hit a triple and scored two runs.

Kenzie Thompson had a double and two RBIs while Bailey Johnson was 3-for-4 with a run scored.

Chloe Gaydeski was 2-for-4 with run scored. On the rubber, she pitched the complete game, allowing 10 hits and one earned run. She struck out four.

Forks (10-2, 13-3) has a nonleague game left at Montesano on Saturday. The Spartans begin postseason play May 17 at Fort Borst Park in Centralia as either a No. 1 or No. 2 seed out of the Pacific 2B League.

Olympic 4, Sequim 3

BREMERTON — The Sequim softball team was victimized by two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning in a 4-3 loss to Olympic on Tuesday.

Despite the loss, Sequim (9-4, 9-6) still has a chance to finish second in the Olympic League if the Wolves can win Friday at Port Angeles. Sequim beat Port Angeles 7-6 earlier this season.

Sequim went into the sixth up 3-2, but the Trojans were able to score the tying and go-ahead runs on a pair of doubles and a single.

Lainey Vig took the loss, going the full six innings. She allowed eight hits and four runs while striking out five.

Hannah Bates was 2-for-4 for the Wolves with two runs scored and three stolen bases. Mia Pozernick was 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI. Jordan Kidd was 2-for-3.

Taylee Rome had a double and an RBI, while Vig had a hit and an RBI.

Sequim and Port Angeles play at Dry Creek Elementary at 4:15 p.m. Friday. Both teams are likely headed to the district tournament.
