PREP SOFTBALL: Port Angeles’ Wheeler is Olympic League MVP, Riders dominate first-team picks

PORT ANGELES — Port Angeles Roughrider Nizhoni Wheeler was named the Most Valuable Player of the Olympic League 2A Division All-League softball team.

Wheeler was the primary pitcher for the Riders who are 19-1 heading into the State 2A tournament that begins Friday.

Her statistics were truly staggering this season. Entering the state tournament, Wheeler has pitched 67.2 innings, struck out 128 batters while walking just 13, allowed an ERA of 0.72, a WHIP (walks+hits per inning) of .532 and has posted a won-loss record of 13-1.

She also has a .513 batting average with three home runs and 16 RBIs on the season.

League champion Port Angeles dominated the All-League selections, with seven Riders making first team and another two players making second team. Coach Randy Steinman also was named Olympic League 2A coach.

Also making the first team were Port Angeles catcher Lauren Lunt, infielders Natalie Steinman, Kylee Reid and Taylar Clark and the entire outfield of Sierra Robinson, Nikaila Price and Ashley Howell.

On the second team are pitcher Callie Hall and infielder Brennan Gray.

Two Sequim players also made all-league second team: Pitcher Isabella Dennis and infielder Bobbi Sparks. Sequim also qualified for the State 2A tournament.
