PREP SOFTBALL, BASEBALL: Riders’ softball sweeps pair; PA baseball back on winning track

Both teams at 6-1 on the season

BELLEVUE — The Port Angeles girls softball team swept a pair of games this weekend from traditionally strong softball programs from Ellensburg and East Valley of Yakima.

The Roughriders crushed Ellensburg 17-2 at a neutral field at Bellevue College on Saturday behind a pair of two-run home runs from Kennedy Rognlien and Natalie Robinson, and solid pitching from Lynzee Reid and Sophia Ritchie. They followed up with a much closer 5-3 win behind a big game in the circle and at the plate from Heidi Leitz.

The wins improved Port Angeles’ record to 6-1 with the one loss to 3A Liberty.

Against Ellensburg, Reed had two hits and an RBI, while Leitz had a triple and three RBIs. Ava-Anne Sheahan was 2-for-2 with a single and a double. MaryRose Halberg had a single. On the mound, Reed pitched two innings, allowing just one hit. She gave up four walks and two runs while striking out three. Ritchie pitched two innings and allowed three hits but no runs. She walked one.

Against East Valley, Leitz pitched the entire seven innings, allowing five hits and one earned run. She struck out eight and walked two as 68 out of 109 pitches were strikes.

At the plate, Rognlien was 3-for-3 with a two-run double in the first inning. She scored another run in the second inning on a single, then came all the way around to home on an error by the East Valley center fielder.

Leitz had a triple and run scored, while Reid hit a double and drove in a run. Robinson had a single, a run scored and an RBI.

Port Angeles (2-0, 6-1) returns to Olympic League play at 4:15 p.m. Tuesday, hosting a good Olympic team (1-1, 5-1) at Dry Creek Elementary.

Baseball Port Angeles 3, Yelm 2

YELM — The Port Angeles baseball team got back on the winning track this weekend, getting solid pitching from its entire staff and clutch hitting in the seventh inning in a 3-2 win over Yelm.

Six Port Angeles pitchers combined to allow just three hits and four walks while striking out nine.

Alex Angevine was awarded the victory with a scoreless inning pitched in the bottom of the seventh. He struck out the final two batters of the game.

Rylan Politika pitched two innings, allowing no hits or walks while striking out four. Brian Guttormsen pitched two solid innings, allowing no runs, one hit and one walk.

The Roughriders has just six hits for the game, but rallied in the seventh with the score tied 2-2. Luke Flodstrom started the rally with a single and moved to second on a groundout and to third on another grounder. He came in to score on an error.

Angevine had an RBI triple in the fifth inning while Josiah Gooding hit a double.

With the win, the Riders bounced back from their only loss of the year Thursday to Olympic.

Port Angeles pitchers this season have allowed three hits or fewer in five of the Roughriders six wins, including two no-hitters, both thrown by Colton Romero.

Port Angeles (3-1, 6-1) next has a tough Olympic League game at home at Civic Field at 4:15 p.m. Tuesday against first-place North Kitsap (4-0, 5-2).
