PREP SOFTBALL AND BASEBALL ROUNDUP: Quilcene and Port Angeles clicking on the diamond

QUILCENE — The Quilcene softball squad took control of the SeaTac 1B League with a pair of blowout wins over Rainier Christian and Evergreen Lutheran.

The Rangers beat Rainier Christian 18-2 on Thursday and Evergreen Lutheran 17-5 on Friday.

Against Evergreen Lutheran, the Rangers left little doubt early, scoring 11 runs in the second inning. Coach Mark Thompson said Evergreen Lutheran pitchers struggled to find the strike zone and Quilcene took advantage, drawing 15 bases on balls.

“We just capitalized on a lot of walks,” he said.

Marissa Kieffer was 2 for 2 with 3 RBI, while Harmony Scholtz was 2 for 3 with an RBI. Coffey, Weller and Macedo all had doubles.

Weller pitched four innings (the first through the third and the fifth), while Brittney Beukes pitched the fourth inning.

“Brittney is getting better every time we put her out there,” said Thompson.

Against Rainier Christian, Quilcene was ahead just 4-2 in the fourth inning, but erupted for seven runs in the fourth and seven in the fifth to win easily.

Sydney Brown was 3 for 3 with four RBIs, while her sister Gina Brown was 2 for 3 with a three-run home run. Erin Macedo was 3 for 4 with a double and two RBI, Allie Speer was 2 for 5 with two RBIs, Pearl Munn was 2 for 3 with 3 RBIs and Madison Coffey was 2 for 4 and with an RBI.

Abby Weller went the whole way on the mound, striking out six and giving up two earned runs.

The wins put Quilcene all alone in first place in league. The Rangers (3-0, 7-2), who finished second in state in Class 1B last season, have scored 15 or more runs in six of their wins this year and have outscored their opponents 127-37.

Quilcene next plays the Port Angeles JV squad at 4 p.m. Tuesday at Dry Creek Elementary in Port Angeles.

Port Angeles 14, Olympic 6

BREMERTON — The Roughriders pounded out 19 hits and played error-free softball in an Olympic League 2A Division win over the Trojans.

“[We] played [our] best game of the year against [Olympic League] No. 2 Olympic on Friday,” Port Angeles coach Randy Steinman said.

“Hope O’Connor took to the mound in relief and shut down the potent Olympic lineup. Natalie Steinman had two triples and scored three runs and Jada Cargo-Acosta had a bases-clearing triple to capitalize on an Olympic two-out error.

Port Angeles will go for its 42nd consecutive Olympic League 2A Division victory at Sequim (4-3, 4-8) on Wednesday.

Port Angeles takes two

BREMERTON — The Roughriders received tremendous pitching performances to take two road games in two days against Kitsap County opponents.

Port Angeles edged Olympic 3-2 on Friday and no-hit Kingston in a 10-1 victory on Thursday.

Colton McGuffey struck out six in five innings, allowing two runs, one earned, on three hits to pick up the win over the Trojans.

Brody Merritt struck out three in two innings to preserve the win and pick up a save.

Milo Whitman had the big hit for Port Angeles, a two-run single and Carson Jackson added a sacrifice fly RBI for the first-place Riders (7-1, 10-2).

Port Angeles visits North Kitsap (6-1, 7-3) on Tuesday in a showdown for the top spot in the Olympic League 2A Division.

In Thursday’s game, senior Brady Shimko went six hitless innings on the mound and sophomore Timmy Adams preserved the no-hitter with a scoreless seventh inning as Port Angeles walked all over Kingston 10-1.

“Our pitchers were the real deal tonight,” Roughriders coach Karl Myers said. “Brady Shimko and Timmy Adams combined for a no-hitter with seven strikeouts.

“Brady threw six strong and was dialed in, it was fun to see him have such success, he has truly earned it. Adams saw his first varsity action of the season [in] shutting down the Bucs.”

Myers said his team took advantage of 11 walks and three hit batters.

“We we’re aggressive on the base paths stealing six bases as a team and moving up on defensive miscues,” he said. “We managed to manufacture 10 runs on only four hits, which was a testament to our approaches at the plate and our aggressiveness on the basepaths.

“Defensively the middle infield of Guerrero and Whitman made some great plays behind the pitchers and Bo Bradow was solid at first.”

POULSBO — The Wolves knocked off the Olympic League 2A-leading Vikings in what Sequim coach Dave Ditlefsen described as a “big upset.”

“After getting hit hard in his first outing against North Kitsap, Johnnie Young made some great adjustments,” Ditlefsen said. “He entered the seventh giving up just one unearned run while striking out seven. He was in command of all three of his pitches and allowed his defense to make some great plays behind him.”

The Wolves pounded out 10 hits in the win.

“We finally broke out at the plate as Silas Thomas and Michael Grubb each had clutch two-out base hits to score two runs,” Ditlefsen said.

Sequim (2-6, 5-7) will host Klahowya on Monday in a nonleague game.
