BAINBRIDGE — Sequim couldn’t pick up the road win in a 1-0 loss to league unbeaten Class 3A Bainbridge, but the shorthanded Wolves didn’t go down without a fight.
With just two substitutes available, Sequim picked up three injuries that left the Wolves down to just 10 players on the field for a good stretch of the second half.
“It was quite a match,” Sequim coach Ken Garling said. “They scored early and we couldn’t score and were unable to get a lot of chances, but credit to the girls, they are fighters. When we don’t have subs, they find a way to come together and make the best of it.”
Garling said freshman Ivy Barrett and seniors Bailey Gennessie and Addie Smith all played well.
“Ivy Barrett was controlled and composed on the ball in the defensive-midfield position,” Garling said. “She was able to stop their attacks up the middle.”
Gennessie was solid once again at center back and Smith made a number of saves in goal.
“We ask them to make one or two really good saves to keep us in it every game,” Garling said of his goalkeepers. “I’ve been really impressed with Addie’s overall performance and confidence.”
Port Angeles 1, North Kitsap 0
PORT ANGELES — The Roughriders earned a bit of revenge for an earlier 1-0 loss to the Vikings with their own 1-0 triumph at Peninsula College’s Wally Sigmar Field on Thursday.
North Kitsap remains at the top of the Olympic League Class 2A standings, but Port Angeles now trails Sequim by just one point for second place.
Coach Scott Moseley was ecstatic about the win.
“It was really the first complete game we have played,” he said. “We were focused on defense, finished well when the chance came and were able to kill off the last few minutes of the game.”
The Riders were missing two players at the earlier contest and had them back for this one.
“We have been team duct-tape all year — barely held together as girls play with sore knees and other ailments,” Moseley said.
The game was scoreless after the first half, with both teams taking dangerous shots on goal. Bailee Larson had two quality shots and Teagan Clark hit the crossbar early in the contest.
In the 63rd minute, Catie Brown was fouled 30 yards from goal.
Clark’s free kick hit the crossbar after being tipped by the North Kitsap goalkeeper and fell to the foot of fellow senior captain Larson.
She calmly knocked a low, left-footed shot in for the only goal of the game. It was Larson’s team- leading seventh goal of the season.
The Riders defense was up for the challenge of holding on to a one-goal lead, as sophomore Paige Mason clearing the ball multiple times and goalkeeper Saylah Commerton making eight saves and earning her fifth shutout of the season.
“The win against a top opponent was really important for the team,” Moseley said. “I predicted a 1-0 win for us and the girls came through. It should give them all confidence as we finish up the regular season.”
The Roughriders travel to play undefeated Bainbridge Island on Tuesday as they seek to improve their position in the league standings for the post-season.

PORT TOWNSEND — Senior goalkeeper Savannah Hoffman saved two penalty kicks and freshman Calia Corden sealed the Rivals’ penalty kick shootout win in the seventh round Thursday.
East Jefferson coach Rob Cantley said his team was having issues for much of the first half.
“Bellevue Christian was pretty much camped in our half and we were having a tough time getting out,” Cantley said. “They weren’t bombarding us with shots, but pressing us effectively.”
But the Rivals scored against the run of play in the 15th minute.
“Our one opportunity to break out and we scored,” Cantley said. “Kaylen Pray took a pass up the left side from Calia Corden, took on her defender, beat her for pace and to the box and sent a nice shot to the corner past the goalie. One of the more ruthlessly effective examples of how you can get outplayed and still lead in soccer.”
The Vikings tied it up just after halftime when East Jefferson came out sluggish once again.
“I was fearing the worst with another slow start, but the girls came to life and turned the game around,” Cantley said. “The rest of the game was us playing in their half and keeping the pressure up. It was a really impressive response and they kind of turned it into a dogfight.”
Hoffman delivered in goal during regulation, overtime and in the shootout.
“She was outstanding,” Cantley said of the senior who volunteered for the goalkeeper role this season.
And Corden was able to clinch the win when her shot beat the goalie in round seven of the shootout.
East Jefferson (4-4, 5-4) visits Cascade Christian on Monday.
