PORT ANGELES —The Port Angeles boys soccer team sealed the Olympic League 2A Division’s fourth seed to the district playoffs with a 4-2 win against North Mason on senior night.
The Roughriders (7-5-0, 9-6-1) will face Washington of the South Puget Sound League in a loser-out contest at Silverdale Stadium at 5 p.m. Tuesday.
Port Angeles got on the scoreboard in the early going in Thursday’s win over the Bulldogs at Civic Field.
Andrew St. George sent home a goal in the third minute on an assist from Tim Meyer.
Port Angeles went up 2-0 in the 26th minute when Wei-Yan Fu converted a penalty kick earned after a North Mason handball.
St. George found the net again in the 63rd minute for his second goal of the game.
Miguel Sebastian scored in the 66th and 73rd minutes for the Bulldogs to trim the Riders’ lead to 3-2.
But Port Angeles picked up an insurance goal when Grayson Peet picked up a loose ball in the penalty box in the 79th minute and tucked it away low and to the corner of the goal.
“Backup goalkeeper Lorenzo De La Torre filled in nicely for the Riders,” coach Chris Saari said.
“[We] look to try and get healthy and back to full strength before moving into the postseason.”
Saari named De La Torre has his defensive player of the match.
He also praised St. George, Fu and Peet for their work in transition.
Sequim 2, Olympic 0
SEQUIM — The Wolves finished the Olympic League 2A Division slate with a win over the Trojans to end up second in the league standings.
But Sequim (8-4-0, 11-5-0), despite finishing with 24 points in the league table, will take the third seed to the district playoffs, and North Kitsap (8-4-0, 8-4-2) with 23 points, will go as the second seed.
“It’s A little bit convoluted, but apparently the points that we garner count for the Olympic League standings, but for districts they don’t count the two points earned from a shootout win, they just go by win-loss record,” Wolves coach Dave Brasher said.
Winning before penalty kicks is worth three points, a shootout win garners two points and a shootout loss is one point.
“So by the district’s seeding we ended up third because we split the first tiebreaker, head-to-head matchup with North Kitsap, and they beat first-place Kingston once and we lost to Kingston twice,” Brasher said.
“The only real difference is we have to travel farther for our playoff game and the opponent on paper looks a little tougher.”
Sequim will face Foster at Bonney Lake in a loser-out game at 5:30 p.m. Thursday.
Against Olympic, the Wolves jumped out to an early lead when Konnor Parish scored in the 10th minute.
“Addie Berg pushed it through to Josiah [Urquia], and he put a low, hard cross that the goalie got a hand on and Konnor knocked it in goal,” Brasher said.
Sequim made that goal stand up, until Urquia notched a late goal with a minute remaining on an assist from Thomas Winfield.
“Their goalie was playing really well,” Brasher said.
“I think he stopped about four of our breakaways.”
Austin Wagner made three saves to earn the shutout in goal for the Wolves.
“He wasn’t too busy, but he made a nice save near the end to keep it 1-0 for us,” Brasher said.
Brasher named Parrish as his man of the match.
He also praised the play of forward Liam Harris and the job done in midfield by Blake Eriks.
