BELFAIR — Dayton Williams notched two goals in the first 11 minutes and Port Angeles earned a 3-1 Olympic League boys soccer road win over North Mason on Thursday.
“PA picked up an important three key league points after losing their last three league games,” coach Chris Saari said.
Williams found the net first in the seventh minute.
“Dayton Williams beat the keeper near post on a pass from Keane McClain,” Saari said. “Keane’s pass was dummied by Xander Maestas and got into the Bulldog penalty box behind the defense to Dayton.”
Eli Fischer assisted on Williams’ 11th-minute strike.
“On a short corner, Dayton took a short pass from Eli and hit a low, driven ball on frame,” Saari said. “The Bulldogs’ goalie tried to make the save, but it deflected off of him and into the goal.”
Jacob Miller found Josiah Long for a 3-0 lead 10 minutes into the second half.
“Josiah Long turned his defender on a pass from Jacob Miller and beat the goalie one-on-one,” Saari said. “It was a great first time turn by Josiah behind his standing leg that put him in behind the defense.”
North Mason found the net in the 57th minute.
“PA held on despite some sustained pressure from North Mason in the second half,” Saari said.
“Marcus Hogan came up big on a one-on-one save with the Bulldogs’ best player, Andy Chau.”
Williams earned the offensive player of the match honor, while Damon Gundersen and Hogan were tabbed as the defensive players of the game and Miller and Long for their work in transition.
The Riders (3-6, 4-6) host Bremerton at 12:45 p.m. today.
East Jefferson wins pair
PORT TOWNSEND — The East Jefferson boys soccer team is right in the thick of the playoff hunt after picking up points in two straight Nisqually League matches this week.
The Rivals tied with Charles Wright 1-1 on Thursday after blanking old Olympic 1A league foe Klahowya 4-0 on Tuesday.
Coach Robert Cantley thought his team was a little fatigued Thursday, playing just two days after the Klahowya win.
“To Charles Wright’s credit, they played well,” he said.
The Rivals picked up their goal on a penalty kick by Connor Scanlon. They were 15 minutes away from winning the match when Charles Wright scored on its own penalty kick.
In the Klahowya win, the Rivals beat the Eagles, typically a 1A boys power, for the second time this season.
“It was a really dominant performance,” Cantley said.
Gary Zambor scored the first goal in about the 20th minute on a rebound after a Scanlon shot.
Zambor picked up another opportunistic goal on a rebound in the second half on a shot by Taj Watson.
“He’s our main striker and he gets himself in the box in good position,” Cantley said.
Scanlon scored the Rivals’ third goal with an assist from Watson. For the fourth goal, Zambor was in the box again putting pressure on the Klahowya goal when he forced an Eagles’ defender to kick it off a teammate and in for an own goal.
Zambor didn’t get credit officially for the goal, but was definitely responsible for causing it, Cantley said.
The Rivals (3-3-1 Nisqually, 3-4-1 overall) next play at Annie Wright (1-2-1, 1-3-1) today.
Sequim 5, Olympic 0
SEQUIM — The Wolves were able to prepare and recover for a tough, three-game gauntlet against three top Olympic League schools with a shutout over the Trojans.
“We got some kids in who don’t get as many minutes for some playing time and our starters got some rest,” coach Ken Garling said.
Brandon Charters scored off a Brandon Wagner assist to get things going in the 12th minute.
Mekhi Ashby came on and scored in the 32nd for a 2-0 halftime lead.
“He hit that from 20-25 yards out,” Garling said. “He saw the opportunity and it was really a beautiful goal.”
Kristian Mingoy followed up a shot for a goal in the 44th minute and Wagner converted a penalty kick for a 4-0 lead in the 62nd minute.
Tyler Lawson headed in a goal in the 72nd off a cross by Ethan Anderson.
“A nice cross came in from the left from Ethan Anderson and Tyler scored another nice header goal, able to redirect it enough to get past the keeper.”
Jack Van de Wege earned his second straight clean sheet in goal.
Sequim (6-2, 6-3) will visit North Kitsap (5-2, 5-2) on Tuesday.
