BREMERTON — A first-half connection lifted Port Angeles to its third Olympic League boys soccer victory on the road, this time a 1-0 victory over Olympic on Tuesday night.
Roughriders head coach Chris Saari said the team created chances early, eventually finding the net in the 22nd minute on a feed from Kanyon Anderson to Matthew Miller.
“Kanyon Anderson fed Matthew Miller a pass outside the Trojan penalty box,” Saari said. “Matthew moved the ball to his right to make space for his shot and beat the senior Olympic goalie Mariano Pena with a driven ball to the goalie’s left side.”
Miller came close to another pair of goals, putting a header off the crossbar in the first half and stealing the ball from Pena just outside the box but his shot was hurried by pressure and missed wide.
The Riders’ defense limited Olympic to only a few chances in the first half on corner kicks and free kicks. The Trojans had the majority of ball possession throughout the game but the Port Angeles defense kept the Olympic offense in check in the final third for the most part, according to Saari.
Port Angeles’ defense worked hard to preserve the shutout, burning time off the clock in the final 10 minutes.
“Sophomore Cannon Wood subbed in midway through the second half for Port Angeles and put in a good short shift at right midfield for the Riders,” Saari said. “He provided energy and made good decisions and simple passes. Defensively, he tracked well and was disruptive.”
Riders goalkeeper Gus Halberg got his third shutout of the season. The Riders defense as a whole continued its turnaround from last year when it had no shutouts. Saari also praised Grant Butterworth’s defense.
Port Angeles (3-1, 4-2) will start a five-game home stand Friday against North Kitsap (3-0, 4-1) at 7:15 p.m. at Peninsula College.
Bainbridge 8, Sequim 0
BAINBRIDGE — The Wolves struggled against the unbeaten Spartans.
“Bainbridge is always a great team and unfortunately when you know that your mindset changes,” coach Dave Breckenridge said. “We tried to give them a run but it didn’t work out. True test for the boys facing the giants that they are.
“We came away with a lot of information and things we definitely need to work on. We have time until we face them at home and I believe the team will be more prepared.”
Sequim (2-2) hosts Olympic on Friday.
