PREP SOCCER: Port Angeles, Sequim fall; Forks bounces back with win over Hoquiam

BAINBRIDGE — The Roughriders held back Class 3A No. 4 Bainbridge’s potent offense in a 2-0 Olympic League road loss.

Port Angeles held Bainbridge scoreless until the 22nd minute, when the Riders’ defense was beaten by Carlos Field-Bennett. The Spartans added another in the 38th when a Port Angeles pass was intercepted and crossed to the far post, where Christopher Fowler volleyed the ball past goalkeeper Marcus Hogan.

“Bainbridge had 70 [percent] of the ball possession throughout the match and were content to keep the ball and hold onto the two-goal lead in the second half,” Riders coach Chris Saari said.

“The Trojans had some good opportunities to score, but failed to capitalize and Port Angeles’ second half goalie Logan Desser kept a clean sheet. Logan made some good saves in the second half and controlled his penalty box on crosses and balls coming in behind the PA defense.”

Saari also said Jacob Miller played well in the midfield.

“Jacob Miller’s play stood out in the midfield … with his work rate and ability to beat some strong Bainbridge defenders on the dribble,” Saari said.

Port Angeles (4-8-0, 5-8-0) sits fifth in the Olympic League’s race for four 2A playoff berths.

“We came away a little banged up and will try to regroup for two important back-to-back league matches with Bremerton (away and home) to end the regular season,” Saari said.

“The Riders remain mathematically still in the hunt for a playoff spot, but results against Bremerton are needed to stay alive.”

Forks 2, Hoquiam 1

FORKS — The Spartans soccer team recovered from a rough 8-1 loss to Elma this weekend with a solid 2-1 win over Hoquiam this week.

“We played pretty well. It was a good bounce-back win,” said coach Ismael Ramos.

Ramos said it was kind of a slow first half in Monday’s match, but the Spartans went into the break tied 1-1 thanks to a goal from DeAnthony Davila. About 20 minutes into the second half, Ethan Bellos scored a go-ahead goal for the Spartans, and they made that score hold up the rest of the way.

“We had the ball in their half of the field for most of the game. We had lots of shots,” Ramos said.

Juan Terrones picked up the win in goal.

The win put the Spartans (7-3, 8-4 overall) in a tie with Montesano for second place in the Pacific 2B League. Elma is leading the league at 11-0.

The Spartans play the same team again today, this time in Hoquiam, for a rare back-to-back. They next play at Eatonville on Friday.
