PREP SOCCER: Port Angeles back on winning track

PORT ANGELES — After two straight losses the Port Angeles boys soccer team regrouped to pick up a key 4-1 Olympic League victory against North Mason.

“[We] created a lot of good chances throughout the game but were only able to put four into the back of the net,” Roughriders coach Chris Saari said of Monday’s game.

Scott Methner took advantage of his opportunities, earning a hat trick for Port Angeles.

Methner opened up the scoring for the Riders in the 24th minute off an assist from Grayson Peet.

“Methner got the ball from Peet and went on a dribbling foray into the North Mason box,” Saari said.

“[He] finally finished with his left foot after beating four or five Bulldogs players.”

Methner again tallied in the 37th minute when he tapped in a loose ball off a rebound in front of the North Mason net.

He picked up his last goal in the 50th minute, scoring another left-footed goal from an assist by Miki Andrus.

Angel Rivero scored on a right-footed shot to the lower right corner in the 65th minute with Andrus again picking up the assist.

Port Angeles and Freshman goalkeeper Keenan Leslie missed the shutout when Austen Bullion scored on volley in the 80th minute for North Mason.

“Leslie had a good solid overall game and made a big one-on-one save in the first half,” Saari said.

Saari named Methner and Andrus as his offensive players of the game, Leslie his defensive player of the and lauded Jeff Glatz and Rivero for their play in transition.

The Riders (4-2-0, 7-3-0) visit rival Sequim (4-2-0, 5-3-2) on Friday.

Port Angeles topped the Wolves twice in March, taking a 2-1 win in a nonleague game before besting Sequim 1-0 in an Olympic League match later that month.
