ILWACO — Forks sealed the Evergreen League 1A championship with an 8-1 win over the Ilwaco Fishermen on Monday but the Spartans held off on a post-game celebration.
“We’re not going to celebrate until Friday if we can beat Elma,” Forks coach Joe Morton said.
The Spartans (10-1-0, 11-3-0, 10 points) host second-place Elma (8-3-0, 9-5-1, 8 points) for senior night Friday in the regular season finale for each team, but with a two-point lead, Forks can’t be caught in the standings by the Eagles.
Forks moved some pieces around against overmatched Ilwaco on Monday.
Starting goalkeeper Gabe Terrones played in midfield for the Spartans, collecting two first half goals and reaching a hat trick with a second-half score.
“He had a great time out there,” Morton said.
Hugo Sandoval also had a hat trick for Forks and Juan Pablo-Flores and Seth Johnson each added goals for the Spartans.
Hector Garcia started in goal and “had to make a couple of good stops,” Morton said.
Sequim 4, Kingston 1
KINGSTON — Mathys Tanche’s second-half hat trick helped the Wolves capped the first undefeated regular season in school history and the program’s second undefeated league championship by spoiling the Buccaneers’ senior night on Monday.
The 2004 Sequim team went unbeaten in the Nisqually League and finished regular season play 14-1-1.
“The kids were super excited, but it wasn’t super easy,” Wolves coach Dave Brasher said of Monday’s game.
“We were a little nervous, excited, anxious and played a little tense at times. And it was Kingston’s senior night and they were up for it.”
Sequim did strike first, scoring in the fifth minute.
“Reid Parker got a header goal,” Brasher said. “Mike McAleer took a free kick from 35 years out, crossed it in from right to left and Sean Weber flicked it on to Reid and got the assist.
“I think at that point we thought it might be nice and easy, but Kingston tightened down.”
The teams went into halftime with the Wolves up 1-0.
Kingston evened the score when they earned a corner kick off of a counterattack and put in a header goal in the 49th minute.
“They had a senior night crowd that was a bit boisterous, a group of students that were shirtless and face painted being loud and we responded pretty well,” Brasher said.
“In the 59th minute Ryan Tolberd fed Mathys Tanche down the left side, and Mathys cut into the box and was taken down.”
Tanche converted on the penalty kick despite the Bucs goalie getting a hand on the attempt.
“Their goalie guessed right, got his hand on it but there was too much Mathys power on the shot and it went off his hand,” Brasher said.
Tanche’s second score in the 68th minute started in the back.
“Chris Morgan played it to Ryan on the right, who crossed it to the middle,” Brasher said. “Adrian Funston took it in and slotted it through to Mathys who cut it back and sent it in with another powerful left-footed shot.”
Weber assisted on a Tanche breakaway in the final minute to close the scoring.
Brasher said Weber, Funston and man of the match McAleer played really well in controlling the middle.
Sequim (12-0-0, 14-0-2) will host a home district playoff game against a South Puget Sound League team at Peninsula College at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 7.
Port Angeles 8, Olympic 0
PORT ANGELES — The Methner brothers scored five goals as the Roughriders finished the regular season with a dominating win over the Trojans to give themselves momentum heading into the district playoffs.
While it was the last regular-season match for the Port Angeles seniors, they will be back at Peninsula College’s Wally Sigmar Field at noon Saturday for their first-round playoff game in the Class 2A West Central District III Tournament.
The Roughriders finished in second place in the Olympic League 2A Division, capping off an outstanding regular season (9-3 27 points, 11-3-0). Two of those three losses were one-goal defeats to Sequim, which hasn’t lost a match all year.
It was senior night and Port Angeles started 10 seniors — Hollund Bailey, Cameron Butler, Austin Fischer, Om Kataria, Gabe Long, Garrett Maheney, Andrew Methner, Colby Rentas, Andrew St. George, Kyler Tourbin and Aron Trubow — for the match. Anton Kathol, playing goalkeeper, was the only junior on the field as the all-senior team played the first 25 minutes of the match.
Andrew Methner had three goals and an assist, while Stuart Methner had two goals, including a header on a Galvan corner kick. St. George had a goal and an assist, while Luis Galvan tallied two assists. Fischer had a unique goal in the 51st minute — an unassisted goal on a corner kick that found the far post.
Trubow also had a goal assisted by Kataria.
Port Angeles outshot Olympic 21-2 and had eight corner kicks to the Trojans’ one.
Kathol and Josh Boe shared the shutout in goal as the Riders picked up their eighth shutout of the year. Port Angeles has only allowed 13 goals all season, six of them to Sequim.
As the Olympic 2A No. 2 seed, Port Angeles will play the South Puget Sound League No. 7 seed in a loser-out match at noon Saturday. It appears that the SPSL No. 7 will be either River Ridge (7-6-0, 11-8-0) or Foster (5-5-4, 6-5-4).
Port Townsend 1, Chimacum 0
CHIMACUM — With their roster down to just 10 eligible players the Cowboys forfeited Monday’s regular-season finale to the rival Redhawks.
Port Townsend coach Rob Cantley said his side loaned out some players to Chimacum and the teams played a low-key friendly match.
The Redhawks (3-3-0, 5-5-2) will play a loser-out district play-in game at the Nisqually League No. 3 (still TBD) at 1 p.m. Saturday.
Chimacum finished the season 0-5, 0-13.
