SILVERDALE — The East Jefferson boys soccer team was hoping for a win, but remained in the thick of the race for playoff spots by forcing a 2-2 tie with Klahowya and picking up a point.
The Nisqually League doesn’t go to shootouts to determine games and awards one point for a tie.
“I thought we were the better team,” said coach Logan Stegner. He said the Rivals had 18 shots and 11 on target, to only eight shots for Klahowya.
“The heat took its toll over the last 20 minutes,” Stegner said. The game was played in 71-degree sun in Silverdale.
Alan Morales scored both goals for the Rivals. His first goal was assisted by Rene Martin and his second was unassisted.
The win put the Rivals’ record at 1-2-1 in league with four league points, tied with Annie Wright, which has an identical record at 1-2-1. Klahowya earned a point for seven in league while Seattle Christian has nine points.
The Rivals (7-2-3 overall) can pick up some huge league wins with three straight games at home over the next week. First is a critical game against Annie Wright on at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday at Port Townsend Memorial Stadium, followed by a game against last-place Charles Wright at 5 p.m. Thursday.
Bainbridge 4, Sequim 0
BAINBRIDGE — The Sequim soccer team gave league-leading Bainbridge as competitive a game as anyone in the Olympic League, but fell to the No. 2-ranked Spartans 4-0 on Saturday.
“We had a couple of opportunities that didn’t quite work out, but none of that mattered. We had a game plan and they executed it perfectly,” said coach Dave Breckenridge. “The boys found themselves, trusted each other, kept the energy as high as possible and had fun playing. What else could you ask for as a coach. A team that has that much fun losing a match says it all. If they continue with this mind set they will have a great rest of a season.”
Bainbridge came in to the game 9-0 in league and 11-0 overall. The Spartans have had league wins of 7-0, 10-0, 12-0, 7-1, 10-1 and 8-0 over Sequim early in the year, so the Wolves played them closer the second go-around. Bainbridge is ranked second in the state in Ratings Percentage Index.
Sequim (5-6, 5-6) next plays at Olympic (3-7, 3-8) on Tuesday, looking to get back to .500 and to stay in fourth place in league.
