SEQUIM — Despite having a young team full of freshmen and sophomores and not having a home court to play on yet, the Sequim volleyball team won its first match of the year, beating North Mason 3-1 (25-17, 21-25, 25-18, 25-15).
A new floor is being put in the Sequim High School gym and the project isn’t finished yet. The Wolves are hoping to play their first match on the new floor next Wednesday.
Coach Jennie Webber-Heilman said her team is very young with only three seniors and one junior. All the other varsity players are sophomores and freshmen. She said she is moving them around the court to get used to different roles on varsity.
“They’ll all be playing multiple positions,” she said.
With last year’s Olympic League offensive player of the year Kendall Hastings graduating and attending Boise State, senior Jolene Vaara moved into the middle hitter role and she came through with 16 kills and seven stuff blocks. She also added 11 digs and served 8-for-10.
Junior Arianna Stovall also had a great match, serving 17-for-18 with six aces and eight kills and going on an eight-point run. Newcomer sophomore Kenzi Berglund served 13-for-15 with four aces. She added seven kills and eight digs.
Setter Sydney Clark, another one of the team’s sophomores, had 33 assists and six digs while serving 11-for-14.
With Sequim’s gym floor unfinished, today’s scheduled match against Port Angeles has been moved to Port Angeles High School.
Kingston 3, Port Angeles 2
PORT ANGELES — The Port Angeles volleyball team lost a marathon 215-point match 3-2 (25-23, 20-25, 25-23, 23-25, 11-15) to Kingston in the Roughriders’ opener.
Port Angeles (0-1) hosts Sequim (1-0) at 6:45 p.m. today.
Cross country
East Jefferson at Klahowya
SILVERDALE — East Jefferson’s Soare Johnston finished second at the season-opening Nisqually League cross-country meet held at Klahowya High School.
Johnston finished with a time of 16 minutes, 54.2 seconds, one of only two runners who finished under 17 minutes.
East Jefferson finished fourth as a team out of eight schools with 101 points. Klahowya, a powerful running school, won with 52 (Like golf, a lower score is better in cross country).
Coming in 19th was Indigo Gould (19:26.8), 21st was Noah Isenberg (19:32.9), 28th was Dustin Hines (20:15.0) and 39th was Silas Klontz (21:29.6). There were 71 runners in the race.
For the girls, East Jefferson’s Leah Ferland was seventh with a time of 23:29.1. Hilina Taylor-Lenz was 14th (25:45.1) and Nola Bertucci was 18th (27:15.9). East Jefferson had just three girls in the race and didn’t get a team score.
