PORT ANGELES — The Sequim volleyball team beat Port Angeles 3-0, though two out of the three sets were close.
The Wolves won 25-22, 25-18, 25-22 to remain the No. 2 2A team in the Olympic League. Bainbridge, a 3A school, is winning the league but takes a different postseason route once the regular season is over.
“It was a great night of volleyball,” said Port Angeles coach Jennifer Reynolds. “Both teams came prepared to play. Our team goals for the match were 92 percent serving, run a quick offense and set the double block. Last night, we served 94 percent, set the double block and were making the attempts to speed up the offense.
“Although we did not walk away with the win, it was great to see the team implement what we’ve been working on,” Reynolds said.
“We actually played pretty well,” said Sequim coach Jennie Webber-Heilman.
Webber-Heilman said the Wolves only missed one serve in the first game and one in the second. They missed four in the third game. “We had to play catch up a little bit,” she said. “[But] we were in a good rotation toward the end of the game.”
The Roughriders’ Cindy Liang served 100 percent with two aces. She also had 12 digs. Lily Halberg also had 100 percent serving with three aces. She also had 28 digs.
Zoe Smithson had seven kills, while Emi Halberg had five kills and 17 digs. Josephine Edgington had 16 assists and eight digs, while Jayde Wold had eight digs.
For the Wolves, Jordan Hegtvedt served 6-for-6 and had 16 digs.
“She was playing great defense. It was fun to watch,” Webber-Heilman said.
Sequim’s Kendall Hastings served 16-for-16 with 17 assists, nine kills, four aces and 11 digs. Jolene Vaara had five aces, serving 13-for-15, nine assists and a season-high 15 kills. Kelsi Bergeson served 16-for-18 with four aces.
Port Angeles (3-4) next plays at North Mason (0-7) on Friday. Sequim (7-2, 6-2) hosts Olympic (3-8, 3-5) at 6:15 p.m. today.
Forks 3, Chief Leschi 0
FORKS — The Spartans improved their record to 4-1 with a 3-0 (25-18, 25-17, 25-16) sweep over Chief Leschi.
Coach Jenn LeDuke said the Spartans are a very young team.
“We’re definitely growing. We have a freshman setter [Erica Williams] who’s never been a setter before. We’re young with a lot of room for growth,” she said.
Williams had 13 assists. Kadie Wood led the Spartans with eight kills and seven aces, while Tyler Neel had eight kills and five aces. Elizabeth Soto had five kills and four aces, and Kaidence Rigby had four kills and three aces.
The Spartans (4-1) next play at home at 7:15 p.m. today against Neah Bay (2-0).
