PREP ROUNDUP: Wolves volleyball pulls out five-set match

SEQUIM — The Sequim volleyball girls are getting good at five-set matches.

They should be, they’ve played six of them this season. The Wolves were 0-4 in five-set matches until last week.

The Wolves beat Olympic 3-2 (21-25, 25-21, 25-19, 22-25, 16-14) in a 213-point, two-hour-long marathon for Sequim’s third-straight win and second-straight five-set win.

“We’ve played enough of them, we’re getting good at it,” said coach Jennie Webber-Heilman.

With that many points, several Wolves had some huge statistics.

Setter Kalli Wiker served 20 for 20 with three aces, a whopping 35 assists and 11 digs. The Wolves’ passing wasn’t the best Tuesday night, forcing Wiker to work hard for those assists.

“She was running all over the place,” said Webber-Heilman.

Kendall Hastings led Sequim with 15 kills and served 11 for 11 with six digs. Kiana Robideau had a big game too with five aces, 13 kills and 29 digs — even though she is not a libero.

Robideau jammed a finger, but stayed in the match, Webber-Heilman said. She was able to serve out the match despite her sore finger.

McKenna Hastings had five kills and nine digs and Jessica Asselin had four kills and 18 digs.

Webber-Heilman said that Malory Morey, brought up from the JV team, got the final point on a tip in Game 5 to end the match.

The win keeps the Wolves mathematically alive for postseason, though Sequim has two extremely tough matches left against North Mason and North Kitsap. Between the two of them, these powerful squads have only lost one league match.

Webber-Heilman said the Wolves (3-6, 4-7) would love to take a set from North Kitsap (8-0, 9-1). The unbeaten Vikings are next on the schedule in Poulsbo this evening.

Elma 3, Forks 0

FORKS — The Spartans lost 3-0 (25-14, 25-9, 25-11) to first-place Elma in an Evergreen 1A League match.

Jayden Olson, Natalie Lausche and Rian Peters all had two kills. Lausche, Peters, Elli Kilmer and Kyra Neel had two blocks each, while Peters and Lausche each served 100 percent.

Kray Horton and Emily Adams each had three assists.

Forks (2-2, 7-3) plays at Port Townsend at 6:15 p.m. today.

Girls swimming

BAINBRIDGE — The Port Angeles swim girls got wins from Mackenzie DuBois and Felicia Che going up against 3A powerhouse Bainbridge.

Bainbridge, which finished fourth at the 3A state meet last year, beat Port Angeles 127-56.

DuBois won the 200-yard freestyle in a time of 2 minutes, 4.6 seconds, while Che won the 100 butterfly with a time of 1:05.08.

Che also picked up a second place in the 200 individual medley with a time of 2:20.95.

With no diving available on the North Olympic Peninsula because the William Shore Pool is being rebuilt, the Roughriders haven’t had a chance to dive much this season, but Anne Edwards finished second in diving in the Bainbridge meet with 147.65 points.

In other events, freshman Lydia Wallace finished second in the 500 freestyle with a time of 6:21.44.

The Riders’ 200 freestyle relay team of Che, DuBois, Emma Murray and Adriana McClain nearly won. The team finished second with a time of 1:51.43, 0.29 of a second out of first place.

Kenzie Johnson finished second in the 100 backstroke with a time of 1:06.23 and the Riders’ 400 freestyle team of DuBois, Sage Hunter, Johnson and Murray finished second with a time of 4:11.0.

The Riders are swimming at the Sequim YMCA at 3 p.m. today in a home meet against Port Townsend.

Boys tennis

Sequim 5, Klahowya 2

SEQUIM — The Wolves tennis team got in a match in the rain, beating Klahowya 5-2 thanks to a sweep from its singles’ players.

Sequim’s Nico Zingaro, Connor Bear and Dallin Despain all won in straight sets.

The Wolves split two doubles’ matches. The duo of Ryan Tolberd and Jackson VanDeWege won in straight sets, while the tandem of Zach McCracken and Dominic Riccobene won in a very tough match 7-6 (7-5), 1-6, 7-4.

Sequim (7-5) next plays at Olympic (3-11) on Thursday.
