PREP ROUNDUP: Wolves soccer, volleyball on winning streaks

SEQUIM — The Wolves’ soccer team is turning its season around very much like it did last year.

In the space of one week, after three straight wins, the Sequim girls had gone from next-to-last in the league to third place and in solid playoff position. The Wolves helped solidify that third-place standing with a 1-0 win over Bremerton on Thursday.

Sequim has picked up eight of its 12 league points in less than a week.

The win came after an emotional penalty-kicks victory over first-place Port Angeles two days earlier .

“We started off sluggish. Tuesday was a physical game. The whole team was pretty tired after that,” said coach Derek Vandervelde.

Sequim nearly had a second overtime game, but in the 70th minute, Abby Schroeder came through with a goal to give the Wolves a lead.

“We had quite a few shots. Their goalkeeper is pretty good. Top-notch, really,” said Vandervelde.

Sequim goalkeeper Olivia Hare earned the shutout, her second one this week.

Sequim (4-4-0 12 points, 5-4-1) next plays at home at 6:45 p.m. Tuesday against Olympic (3-5-0 10 points, 4-7-0).

BLAINE — The Sequim volleyball team won two straight this weekend, and got its first 5-set victory in five tries.

The Wolves beat Blaine 3-2 (22-25, 25-23, 15-25, 25-19, 15-7), digging out of a hole to pull out the nonleague match.

Sequim had played four previous 5-set matches, but lost all of them until Saturday.

Coach Jennie Webber-Heilman said experience is crucial for winning 5-set matches.

“Being able to play with that pressure,” she said. “It just takes experience.”

Amanda Weller served 25 for 25 as the team served 93 percent. She also had a 7-point serving run in Game 5 to finish the match.

Kiana Robideau had 10 kills and four stuff blocks and led the Wolves’ defense with 23 digs.

Setter Kalli Wiker served 10 for 10 with 25 assists. Kendall Hastings had 10 kills, 23 touches and two blocks, while McKenna Hastings had two aces, six kills, eight digs and eight perfect passes. Jordan Hegtvedt served 12 for 12 with 11 digs.

Jessica Asselin served 18 for 18 with two aces and 17 digs and Malory Morey came up from the JV team to notch three kills, two blocks and five digs.

The Wolves also beat Bremerton 3-0 (25-18, 25-21, 25-23) on Thursday.

Wiker served 20 for 20 with 25 assists and eight digs, while Weller had four aces. Robideau led the Wolves with 11 kills and 17 digs, while Kendall Hastings had 10 kills. Hegtvedt had 11 digs, while McKenna Hastings served 10 for 11 with six digs.
