CHEHALIS — The Port Angeles girls basketball team had a strong first half against powerhouse WF West, but the Bearcats pulled away with a 20-0 third quarter to win 57-24.
The Roughriders were tied 17-17 at the half.
“We had a strong first half in terms of defensive effort and rebounding on both ends of the floor. Each team’s defense forced 11 turnovers in the first half, and both offenses struggled from the field,” said Port Angeles coach Michael Poindexter. “Our quickness and tenacity defensively and on the boards in the first half was the highlight of the game for us.”
“The second half brought massive struggles in shooting for us — 2-for-22 field goals. We also gave up nine offensive rebounds in the half, as opposed to just four in the first half,” Poindexter said. “6-foot-3 junior Julia Dalan was nearly unstoppable for WF West, scoring 19 of her 26 points in the second half and picking up seven blocked shots in the game.”
Lindsay Smith led the Riders in scoring with 13, while Paige Mason led the team in rebounds with eight. Teanna Clark had eight points and three steals.
“If we can maintain our defensive effectiveness for an entire game and bring our improved shooting in practice to games with us, we’ll begin to find success in the more challenging games we face on this year’s schedule,” Poindexter said.
Port Angeles (0-0, 1-1) returns to action Thursday with the Roughriders’ first Olympic League game, at home at 7 p.m. against Bremerton (0-0, 0-2).

SILVERDALE — East Jefferson got a big season-opening victory over Nisqually league foe Klahowya, coming from behind for a 61-44 win on Friday night.
Brody Moore led the Rivals with 25 points and four steals while big inside presence Stuart Dow (6-foot-8) had 15 points. Dow nearly had a triple double as he also had nine rebounds and eight blocks. Keidan Guzman had eight points, seven boards and four assists.
East Jefferson (1-0) next hosts Cascade Christian at 7 p.m. Thursday at Chimacum High School.

Crescent 59, Ocosta 48
JOYCE — The Crescent boys basketball team won two in a row this weekend getting double-digit scoring in eight straight quarters.
The Loggers beat Ocosta 59-48 on Saturday and beat Quilcene 73-45 on Friday.
“We came out in the first quarter with a strong effort, with five guys scoring points right away to stake us out to an early lead,” coach Chris Ferrier said of Saturday’s win. “We had consistent quarterly scoring all throughout and that was a testament to the unselfish nature of the guys on the team.”
Conner Bauers had a big game with 18 points, while Lukas Love nearly had a triple-double with nine points, 10 rebounds, 10 steals and five assists. Henry Bourm scored 13 and Dominiq Sprague nine.
In Friday’s game, Lukas Love had a huge game with 25 points, 11 rebounds and seven steals, while Quilcene’s Taylor Boling had 21.
“Quilcene was much bigger than us so we had to game plan to negate that size advantage. We were able to play the pace we wanted,” Ferrier said. “Lukas had a tremendous first quarter, coming out and knocking in 12 points inside against a big size disadvantage.”
Sprague scored 11 and Levi Bourm and Owen Watson each scored nine for Crescent. Andrew Lopez scored 14 for Quilcene.
We got buckets from a lot of different guys and got great minutes from a couple of freshmen Levi Bourm and John Lium,” Ferrier said.
Crescent (2-1) next plays at Crosspoint on Tuesday while Quilcene (0-1) plays at Clallam Bay at 6:30 p.m. today.
