BREMERTON — Sequim’s Garrett Little won the boys West Central District championship, outlasting Jack Wang of Sammamish 7-5, 4-6, 6-3 in the title match.
Little will move on to the state 2A meet in the spring held at the University of Washington campus by beating Ethan Dang of Lindberg, Jordan Wang of Sammamish in straight sets to move into the semifinals. He won his semifinal match in a forfeit.
Meanwhile, the Port Angeles Roughriders boys tennis team will send Reef Gelder and the doubles team of Edun Bailey/Jacob Miller to the state 2A tennis tournament.
Gelder and Bailey/Miller each finished third, qualifying for state at the district tennis tournament held this weekend at the Kitsap Athletic Club.
Gelder beat Angus Claflin of Highline and Dayshawn Harper of North Kitsap on day one of the district tournament to move into the semifinals. After losing to Jack Wang of Sammamish in the semis, Gelder finished third place when his opponent had to withdraw due to illness.
Bailey and Miller also won their first two matches against two different teams from Sammamish. They lost in the semis to Ryker Flatz and Nico Grados of Fife. In their final match versus Spencer Gillespie and Justin Gallant of North Kitsap, the Rider duo won in straight sets 6-3, 6-3 to finish in third.
Roughriders sophomore Nathan Basden went 1-2 on the first day of the tournament and was eliminated.
“This was the first experience for Edun and Jacob playing indoors and they made the most of it. They were hitting absolute rocket first serves and looked right at home playing in this environment,” said coach Brian Gundersen. “I knew Reef would be comfortable after qualifying for state last year. I’m really happy for all three boys and can’t wait to see how we fare at UW this spring.”
Though boys tennis is a fall sport, the state championships are held in late spring.
Port Angeles finished the regular season as the co-Olympic League Champions with a record of 11-1.
