CHIMACUM — Sequim plated seven runners to go up big on its way to a 14-1 win over East Jefferson in a cool, damp six-inning baseball game Wednesday at Chimacum High School.
The seven-run third didn’t see Sequim record a hit as the Wolves turned a 2-1 lead into a 9-1 advantage thanks to six walks, four wild pitches, two hit batters and two errors.
Michael Grubb led Sequim at the plate, going two for three with two RBIs. Connor Bear scored four runs and drove in another; Bodi Sanderson walked three times and scored twice, and Ayden Holland recorded two RBIs.
East Jefferson (0-2) loaded the bases on three walks in the bottom of the first, and Ryan Popp scored on a Sequim balk.
The Wolves (1-0) host Central Kitsap and East Jefferson welcomes Klahowya, both on Monday.
Boys Soccer
Sequim 11, East Jefferson 0
PORT TOWNSEND — Wolves captain Eli Gish found the back of the net five times, and Tyler Lawson added a hat trick in the season opener for each squad.
“He just came out super motivated,” Sequim coach Ken Garling said of Gish. “Like the rest of the boys that were on the squad last year that didn’t get to play, he’s extra motivated. He’s always been able to score, but he was back at defender [as a sophomore in 2019], and he wanted to be more on the attack side this year, so we decided let’s give him a shot, put him higher up, and it worked out as we hoped it would.”
East Jefferson coach Rob Cantley said his team is rebuilding after losing 12 seniors.
“We have some kids who are playing soccer for the first time ever, and Sequim is a talented team with more club and varsity experience.”
Lawson also impressed Garling.
“What I like about him is his instincts around the ball,” Garling said. “He follows up on shots and has a nose for being in the right place at the right time.”
Kristian Mingoy added a goal and two assists.
“He was solid all over the field,” Garling said. “He almost scored on a bicycle kick from the 6-yard box that would have been one of the greatest goals I’ve ever seen. The East Jefferson goalie [Hazen McMillian] made a tremendous save.”
Defender Brandon Wagner pushed forward and scored a goal from about 25 yards out, and Ethan Knight finished out the scoring with a shot from 18-yards out.
Garling said Wagner and fellow defender Harrison Bell paired up well defensively, and defensive midfielder Aidan Henninger “did a wonderful job of controlling the middle part of the pitch.”
Sophomore goalkeeper Nova Barrett had a couple of saves in his varsity debut.
Sequim (1-0) hosted Port Angeles late Thursday while East Jefferson (0-1) hosts Port Angeles on Tuesday.
Forks 3, Montesano 0
MONTESANO — Brothers Jesus and Hector Dominguez notched first-half goals, and William Perez added a second-half insurance goal as the Spartans blanked the Bulldogs in their season opener.
Forks (1-0) hosts Tenino at 6 p.m. tonight.
Golf
Sequim splits with Klahowya
SEQUIM — The Wolves split a pair of matches with the Eagles with the Sequim boys winning 171-224 and the girls falling by just one stroke 217-218 in a match played in rough, rainy conditions at Gold Mountain Golf Club.
Dominic Riccobene was match medalist with a nine-hole round of 3-over par 39.
Ben Sweet and Pryce Glasser each carded 43, and Garret Hoesel shot a 46.
Wolves boys coach Sean O’Mera said his team played really well despite the inclement weather.
“This was the first varsity match of their careers for Pryce, Cole [Smithson, who shot a 55] and Truman [Nestor, who shot 53], so I am especially proud of them,” O’Mera said.
Glasser also hit a hole-in-one Monday on No. 17.
Hannah Wagner led the Sequim girls with a round of 52, while Jessica German (53), Jelissa Julmist (44) and Delaney Nucci (58) also counted toward the Wolves’ score.
Sequim girls coach Tim Lusk said his team played through rough weather, including standing water on the final three greens.
“Too many three and four putts, but all the girls toughed it out, and I am very proud of them,” Lusk said.
Girls Tennis
East Jefferson 4, Central Kitsap 3
CHIMACUM — East Jefferson’s No. 2 singles player Juniper Cervenka and the No. 2 doubles team of Myka Briggs and Olivia Mattern both won third-set tiebreakers in the victory.
Cervenka triumphed 6-4, 5-7, 10-8 while Briggs and Mattern won 6-2, 3-6, 10-5.
East Jefferson (1-0) hosts Bremerton on Monday.
Track and Field
Sequim vs. Olympic
SEQUIM — The Wolves controlled the sprints and the long distances in the girls portion of Wednesday’s early-season meet.
Riley Pyeatt posted wins in the 100- and 400-meter races, and freshman Taryn Johnson earned an impressive win in the 200 sprint (29.65 seconds) edging out Olympic’s Iyona Davis by .23 seconds.
Alex Schamadeke and Anastasia Updyke claimed the 800 and 1600 races, respectively for the Wolves.
On the boys side, Henry Hughes was a dual winner in the 400 and the high jump. Colby Ellefson picked up a personal record time of 5:02.66 to win in the 1,600.
The Wolves will compete at North Kitsap on Saturday.
