SEQUIM — Wolves volleyball coach Jennie Webber Heilman hopes a close 3-2 defeat to Kingston doesn’t continue a trend the team fell into in the fall of 2019.
Up 2-1, Sequim allowed Kingston to rally in the fourth set and the Bucs triumphed during a back-and-forth deciding set.
“We were up in that [fourth] game and let them back in it, that was a little disappointing,” Webber Heilman said.
“We are going to have to get over this if it carried over from last season where we had a lot of close games but were unable to finish strong.”
Sequim recorded some strong stretches of play.
“We had some great serving runs from some of our kids,” Webber Heilman said. “Amanda Weller had a nine-point serving run with four aces in the first set. She got us right back into the game. And she had a seven-point serving run in the second game and a six-point run in the third.”
Weller served 28 for 31 with eight aces, eight digs, three kills and four perfect serve-receive passes.
Setter Kalli Wiker was running all over the court for the Wolves.
“At first our passes were not going where they were supposed to and she was chasing them down,” Webber Heilman said. Wiker posted 25 assists and served three aces. She also was on the move defensively.
“They were hitting at her a lot and she ended up with 15 digs which is a big number for a setter,” Webber Heilman said. “She was playing defense in the front and the back row.”
Jayla Julmist led Sequim with 14 kills and had two stuff blocks.
“She had some boomer hits and some back slides that had everybody saying, ‘Wow,” Webber Heilman said.
The Wolves’ other middle hitter, Kendall Hastings, added 10 kills and five stuff blocks.
“She was leading our defense,” Webber Heilman said.
Older sister McKenna Hastings served 17 of 18 with an ace, with six perfect passes on serve receive and two kills.
Jessica Asselin added 10 digs and Jordan Hegtvedt served 13 for 14 with two aces and posted eight digs.
Lindsay Swanson also served 15 of 16 with three aces and was part of an eight-point serving run to help Sequim stick close late. She also had 19 digs.
Sequim (1-1) visits Olympic on Wednesday.
Quilcene 3, Clallam Bay 2
CLALLAM BAY — The Quilcene spikers hung on to beat Clallam Bay in five games 25-21, 12-25, 23-25, 25-12, 15-12.
“After losing the first game we got into a groove. The next two games were exciting. The fourth game I take blame, I interrupted the flow and played some of our less experienced players. But it was a eye opener for them to see how intense the games get,” said Clallam Bay Coach Amanda Jean Maines.
“Fifth game we fought hard but Quilcene was a good team. I hope we play them again at the end of season,” Maines said.
She said setter Patience Swan has become a good leader on the team and that libero Justice Pilatti works hard. Clallam Bay plays Chief Kitsap on Tuesday.
Port Angeles at Olympic, ppd.
BREMERTON — The Riders’ road match against the Trojans was postponed due to what was described as “a construction emergency.”
“They weren’t able to get into their gym or access any of their equipment,” Port Angeles coach Jennifer Reynolds said.
Olympic High School was remodeled and an addition added during 2017-18.
Swimming Port Angeles time trial No. 2
PORT ANGELES — Port Angeles had three swimmers hit the Olympic League 2A districts time standards tonight during the Roughriders’ second time trial of the season.
Team captain Adriana McClain registered a district in the 500 freestyle with a time of 6 minutes, 4.45 seconds. Freshman Harper McGuire qualified for districts in each event she swam, including the 50 freestyle (27.39), the 200 individual medley (2:14.33) and the 500 freestyle (6:04.45).
Freshman Yau Fu also posted a district time in the 500 freestyle with a 6:17.14.
The Riders’ relay teams also qualified for districts.
The 200-yard medley relay team of McGuire, McClain, Sara Wilson and Anne Edwards qualified with a time of 2:08.21, while the team of Emilee Reid, Rachel Cooper, Fu and Sophia Salas swam a time of 2:16.48.
The 200-yard freestyle relay team of McClain, Salas, Wilson and Edwards swam a time of 2:00.80.
Coach Sally Cole said Reid had a solid swim in the 100 backstroke (1:15.28) and Cooper in the 100 breaststroke (1:23.29).
In the 1-meter dive, Edwards led the way with a 147.75, while Aubrie Scott scored a 143.10, Maizie Tucker a 112.75 and Grace Possinger a 97.25.
6-man Football Mary M. Knight 69, Clallam Bay 0
CLALLAM BAY — The Bruins have a young team, but they fought hard to the bitter end in a tough 69-0 loss to Mary M. Knight, said coach Aaron Burdette.
“We have a lot of young players. We did the best we could. They put up a fight and didn’t give up,” Burdette said. “We have a young, young team. We lost everyone.”
Clallam Bay will host Crescent next Friday in a six-man game.
