PORT ANGELES — Sequim gave league-leading Port Angeles all it could handle in a heavy rainstorm at the Billy Whiteshoes Memorial Park, but the Roughriders capitalized on some key hits and errors to come from behind to beat the Wolves 7-5 and remain undefeated in the Olympic League 2A Division.
With a win, the upstart Wolves would have not only snapped the Roughriders’ 40-game league winning streak, they would have had a share of first place. Sequim had a lead of 3-0 after the middle of the fourth inning, but the Roughriders rallied with two runs in the fourth, three in the fifth and two in the sixth to keep their league streak alive. Interestingly, Port Angeles’ last league loss was to Sequim 8-5 on May 16, 2014.
Isabelle Dennis did all she could to help the Wolves’ cause, pitching the entire game and giving up just six hits to a high-powered offensive team that came in to Monday’s game averaging 12½ runs a game. Dennis also had two hits, including a home run, and she scored three runs.
Bobbi Sparks and Brianna Dominguez each went 2 for 4 for the Wolves with an RBI each.
For the Riders, Hope O’Connor was the star with a double and two RBIs. She also pitched the final three innings, giving up two runs while striking out five to pick up the victory.
Callie Hall also had two doubles for the Riders, with a run and an RBI and she pitched the first four innings, giving up three runs and striking out five. The Riders’ Natalie Steinman had a double, an RBI and two walks.
Sequim (3-2, 3-7) now sits tied with North Kitsap for third place in league. The Wolves next host North Mason (0-3, 2-8) at 4:15 p.m. Wednesday.
Port Angeles (5-0, 8-1) plays at home at 4:15 Wednesday against Bremerton (1-3, 2-5).

Sequim ninth at invite
BURLINGTON — Sarah Shea finished seventh out of more than 60 golfers at the 26th annual Burlington-Edison Girls Invitational at Skagit Golf and Country Club on Monday.
Shea shot an 88 in torrential rain and cold conditions to lead Sequim.
The Wolves finished ninth out of 21 teams from various classifications around Western Washington.
With the number of players and the weather, 18-hole rounds averaged 6 1/2 hours to complete.
“The weather was horrible,” Sequim coach Garrett Smithson said. “I’ve played a lot of golf in my life and I’ve personally never played in as conditions that were that bad.”
Smithson said he understood why the event went forward despite the inclement conditions.
“The tournament comittee wanted to play the event, they had booked the course and collected fees from each school, but it was rough for all the girls in the tournament.”
And the scoring reflected the conditions.
“Sarah wasn’t happy with her score but it shows how bad the weather was. Finishing the round was a positive for all of them.”
Samantha Smith added a 115 and Yana Hoesel a 118 for the Wolves.
Central Kitsap’s Brittany Kwon won the individual title with a 76 and Mercer Island repeated as team champs
Maddie Uranga was third in the nine-hole portion of the event with a 50 for Sequim.
The Wolves host Kingston on Thursday.
