SEQUIM — Sequim nearly overcame 16 strikeouts by Archbishop Murphy pitcher Brooke Jordan, tying the game in the bottom of the seventh to force extra innings, but ultimately came up just short 5-4 in a heartbreaker.
The Wolves had a 3-1 lead going into the seventh inning in Saturday’s game, but fell behind after the Wildcats got three runners on with two walks and an error. Archbishop Murphy ended up scoring three runs after a triple to take a 4-3 lead.
Sequim tied it in the seventh, but two Archbishop runs in the ninth were the difference. Sequim responded with a run in the bottom of the ninth, but couldn’t push through the winning run.
The Wolves’ Shelby Jones went the distance. Ashleigh Cate and Kailyn Lopez led Sequim with three hits each.
Sequim (1-0, 1-5) next plays Olympic Peninsula rival Port Angeles (2-0, 4-1) at 4:15 p.m. Wednesday at the Dry Creek Elementary fields.

COUPEVILLE — The Forks girls completed their pre-league season with a sweep over 2B power Friday Harbor 10-1 and 9-6.
The Wolverines won a pair of games at the 2B State Tournament last year.
Brittney Dean and Chloe Leverington paired up for 14 strikeouts in the first game. Dean went four innings with one hit, seven strikeouts and one walk. Leverington went three innings with three hits, seven strikeouts and one walk.
Bailey Kratzer went 4 for 4 with a double while Taegan Counsell was 3 for 3 with a triple.
In the second game, Jayden Olson went four innings with five strikeouts and a walk. She gave up four earned runs on six hits. Dean came in and finished the game, going three innings with two strikeouts, a hit, a walk and no runs allowed.
Olson had a solo home run in Game 2, while Kratzer was 2 for 4 with a double and Bailey Queen was 2 for 4 with a double. Leadoff hitter Julia Lausche got on base with three walks.
The Spartans (0-0, 4-1) have gotten off to a solid start to the season, and now they enter a very tough Evergreen 1A schedule with a game at home at 4 p.m. Tuesday against Hoquiam, which was third in the State 1A Tournament last year. The Evergreen 1A League is one of the toughest softball leagues in the state. Elma is 6-1, Hoquiam is 4-0 and defending state 1A champion Montesano is 3-0.

Port Angeles 15, Roosevelt 13
SEATTLE — A couple of days after losing in a tight pitchers’ duel to Olympic, the Roughriders broke out the lumber Saturday, banging out 13 hits in a 15-13 road win over 3A Roosevelt.
“This was a completely different type of game, the bats on both sides came alive in a wild game. Bunch of big hits, lead changes and great execution by both teams. We had a ton of guys really swing it well and put together great ABs,” said coach Karl Myers.
Two days earlier, the Roughriders managed just one run and five hits in a 2-1 loss to Olympic.
It was a wild one with huge swings of momentum. The Riders got down 5-2, but erupted for six runs in the fourth to take an 8-5 lead. They extend the lead to 10-7 in the fifth, then Roosevelt responded with a six-run inning of its own in the bottom of the fifth to take a 13-10 lead.
Port Angeles answered with four runs in the top of the sixth to take a 15-13, then Riders pitchers Slater Bradley and Andrew Pena finally shut down Roosevelt, not allowing a run in the sixth and seventh innings. Bradley picked up the win while Pena is credited with a save.
Myers said that beyond the slugging the Roughriders took advantage of a couple of squeeze play opportunities with Daniel Basden and Joel Wood executing perfect squeeze bunts. Wood’s bunt scored the go-ahead run with Jackson Carson scoring all the way from second base.
Tyler Bowen led the Riders, going 3 for 4, with three runs scored and an RBI. Wood was 2 for 4 with a double, a run and four RBIs, while Ethan Flodstrom was 2 for 3, with a triple, three RBIs and two runs scored. Jackson was 2 for 4 with a double, three runs scored and an RBI, while Colton McGuffey was 1 for 4 with 2 RBIs and a run scored.
Port Angeles also played well on defense, making just one error to seven errors for Roosevelt.
Port Angeles (2-1, 5-1) next plays rival Sequim (0-3, 3-4) at Civic Field at 6 p.m. Wednesday.

COUPEVILLE — Forks lost a pair of games to 2B baseball power Friday Harbor.
The games were played in Coupeville, with each team making a single ferry trip.
Coach Jason Richard said Chance Wilson “pitched a great game” in the first game, but that the Spartans were missing a number of key players, including Brett Moody, who is recovering from surgery on a nose broken during wrestling season.
“We definitely have a solid team when we get everyone out there,” Richard said.
Wilson hit 3 for 4 in the game.
Friday Harbor went 21-1 last year and went to the state 2B tournament.
Forks (0-0, 0-3) next begins Evergreen 1A League play at home at 4 p.m. Tuesday against Montesano (0-0, 4-1). The Spartans then travel to Montesano on Wednesday for a game.
