SEQUIM — Sequim opened its girls swimming season with an 86-75 win over East Jefferson at the Sequim YMCA on Wednesday.
“We had a great first meet in which we won 86-75 with taking first place in 10 of the 12 events,” coach Sarah Thorson said. “We qualified for districts in six events with two girls qualifying in the 100 butterfly.
Other district qualifiers included: Melia Nelson in the 200 freestyle with a time of 2 minutes, 25.13 seconds; Ava Shinkle in the 200 individual medley in 2:38.02; Shinkle (1:12.54) and Nelson (1:17.06) in the 100 butterfly; Annie Ellefson in the 100 free (1:01.91) and 100 breaststroke (1:18.76) and Natalie Cross in the 50 free (6:26.77).
“We had a great start to our season, and we are looking forward to a great year,” Thorson said.
Sequim hosts Kingston on Wednesday.
Bainbridge 131, Port Angeles 54
PORT ANGELES — The Riders delivered what coach Sally Cole described as “a commendable performance” against the powerhouse Class 3A Spartans.
“The Riders displayed determination and competitive spirit throughout the meet,” Cole said.
Harper McGuire put on a strong showing in the 200-yard freestyle, finishing second and coming remarkably close to the state standard time by just 1.5 seconds.
Lizzy Shaw exhibited her speed in the 50 free, securing a solid second-place finish and a district qualifying time. In the demanding 500 free, Lynzee Reid demonstrated her endurance with a respectable third-place finish while qualifying for the district meet. McGuire continued to impress with a second-place finish in the 100 backstroke to earn a shot at districts.
The 200-medley relay Team, featuring Danika Asgeirsson, Brooke St. Luise, Amayah Nelson and Shaw was second, while the 200 free relay Team, led by Shaw, McGuire, Amayah Nelson, and Yau Fu, delivered a strong second-place finish. In the 400 free relay, Lynzee Reid, Asgeirsson, Yau Fu and McGuire earned second place.
Port Angeles swimmers achieved noteworthy Districts qualifying times. Nelson showcased her versatility with qualifying times in the 200 individual medley and 100 butterfly.
Asgeirsson and St. Luise also earned their place with qualifying times in the 100 back and 100 breast, respectively.
The Riders visit Klahowya on Wednesday.
Cross Country meet
BREMERTON — Port Angeles boys and girls teams plus individual runners from Sequim competed at the first race of the season, the 2-mile Olympic League Jamboree at the Kitsap County Fairgrounds.
“Great first meet for all of our runners,” Riders coach Rodger Johnson said. “Returners are looking strong and surprising speed from some of the new runners.”
Three Wolves girls raced Wednesday. Junior Dawn Hulstedt placed fifth with a time of 13:32.9, Aspen Goldner ended up in 30th place in 16:12.8 and Birdie Pyeatt came in 36th in 17:02.9.
Port Angeles placed fourth overall in the girls race with 104 points, led by sophomore Leia Larson’s eighth-place finish in 13:54.5.
Freshman Miriam Cobb debuted with an 11th-place finish in 14:16.5, while Faerin Tate was 20th in 15:05.4.
Mirabel Palacios (45th in 18:24.3); Evian Moniz (56th in 19:16) and Brenna Hedtke (68th in 24:16.3).
Bainbridge dominated the girls race with 17 points and Spartans junior Mairin O’Brien won the event in 12:20.8.
The Port Angeles boys finished fifth overall with 116 points, while Bainbridge won the event with 49 team points. Kingston’s Lucas Lenz won the race in 10 minutes, 16.8 seconds.
Sophomore Easton Dempsey posted the best Riders time to finish 20th in 11:51.8.
Port Angeles senior Tymur Lytvak was 22nd in 12:09.6, while classmate Jayden McClarty was 23rd in 12:17.
Andre Campbell finished 25th for the Riders with a time of 12:18.8 and Lukas Teague ended up 27th in 12:19.9.
Sequim had two boys runners: Solas McGruther placed 26th in 12:19.5 and freshman Adrian Osborne was 29th in 12:29.6.
Boys Tennis Port Angeles 6, Bainbridge 1
BAINBRIDGE — The Roughriders swept the singles matches and took three of four doubles contests to run their season record to 3-0.
“I’m really happy with how well we’re playing right now. Guys are playing smart, getting ahead, and beating Bainbridge on the road is always a tall task,” said coach Brian Gundersen.
Gundersen singled out Schmidt and Hoch as the players of the match.
“Reid and Keatyn dropped the first set, but didn’t panic. They settled down, played as a team, and pulled out the next two sets to get a big win,” said Gundersen.
Port Angeles has their first home match on Monday vs. North Kitsap.

SEQUIM — The Wolves won both contested matches against the short-handed Bulldogs.
Sequim’s No. 1 doubles team of William Hughes and Tom Laschet won 6-4, 6-2, while the Wolves No. 2 doubles pairing of Sebastian Buhrer and Lincoln Bear won in straight sets 6-1, 6-1.
Sequim hosts Olympic on Monday.
