SEQUIM — The Sequim girls bounced back from a season-opening loss to powerhouse Archbishop Murphy with a 5-1 win over Chimacum.
Daisy Ryan scored two goals for the Wolves in Saturday’s match. Jessica Dietzman, Natalya James and Nathalie Torres also scored goals for the Wolves.
The Wolves weren’t able to score until the 37th minute, then erupted for two quick goals before the end of the half and quickly scored at the beginning of the second half to take a commanding 3-0 lead.
“We struggled in the first half to find our rhythm,” said coach Derek Vandervelde. We were missing some key players and struggled a little bit.”
Backup goalie Olivia Hare and Brianna Dominguez combined in the win. Starting goalie Claire Henninger was taking ACT tests and was banged up in the Archbishop Thomas Murphy game.
Chimacum’s goal was scored by Grace Johnson.
Sequim opened its season Thursday with a 3-1 loss to ATM. Vandervelde said the Wolves “played really well” against the Wildcats, who finished third at the state 2A tournament last year.
“We held on for quite a while against them,” said Vandervelde, in spite of the team rebuilding its back line this season, including having to replace center back player Claire Payne, who is out for the year with an injured knee. In fact, the game was tied 1-1 until the 73rd minute when ATM took the lead on the Wildcats’ second goal. They added an insurance goal in the 79th minute.
The Wolves (0-0, 1-1) next play at Olympic at 6:45 p.m. Tuesday for their Olympic League 2A opener.
Cross Country Forks at Ocosta Invitational
WESTPORT — The Forks Cross Country girls completely dominated at the Ocosta Invitational, taking the first six places.
Not only did Forks get the top six spots in Saturday’s race, the Spartan girls got seven finishes in the top 10. Forks easily came in first in team points with 15 to Montesano’s 50.
Enid Ensastegui won the race with a time of 19 minutes, 31.7 seconds. Marissa Bailey was second, Madison Carlson third, Melisa Galindo fourth, Karen Ensastegui fifth in her first varsity race, Madelyn Archibald sixth and Iesha Johnson ninth.
For the boys, Forks’ Samuel Gomez had the top finish, coming in fourth with a time of 17:27.5. Luis Perez was sixth with a time of 17:32.17.
The Forks boys came in third as a team out of seven schools.

Boys Tennis North Kitsap 6, Port Angeles 1
POULSBO — North Kitsap beat Port Angeles 6-1 in boys tennis last week in a meet against the defending Olympic League champion that was much closer than the score indicated, according to coach Gil Stockton.
Hayden Woods got the team’s game ball after Thursday’s meet, winning his match against North Kitsap’s No. 2 singles’ player Sam Horn. Woods won 6-4, 6-4. Three of of the doubles’ matches were close. Hunter Dougherty and Jadon Seibel nearly won their doubles match, eventaully falling 6-0, 5-7, 6-7. tockton said this match lasted nearly three hours.
“[It was a] classic example of score (1-6) not reflecting how close the match was. Three set doubles matches with tie breaks — could have gone either way but we came up just short. The guys played well against a very good team and learned the importance of how each point is very important to the outcome,” Stockton said. “This is going to be a fun season for the guys.”
The teams of Brady Nickerson and Kyler Tourbin, and Wyatt Hall and Tanner Price also had matches that went to three sets.
The boys next play at Olympic at 4 p.m. today.
