SEQUIM — The Sequim duo of Brandon Barnett and Hayden Eaton combined for a five-inning no-hitter as the Wolves baseball team bounced back from a league loss to Port Angeles by crushing Mount Tahoma 11-0.
Barnett went the first four innings, giving up no hits, striking out five and walking four. Eaton finished up in the fifth, pitching a perfect inning with no hits, no walks and a strikeout.
Both Barnett and Eaton are sophomores for the Wolves.
“It kind of snuck up on us because they had a lot of baserunners, but it’s very, very cool,” said coach Dave Ditlefsen. It had been a long time since the Wolves had an official no-hitter, so long that Ditlefsen couldn’t remember the last one.
Ditlefsen said Barnett and Eaton might be young (they were both on the junior varsity last year), but they are experienced.
“They played a loss with the Crosscutters. They’ve both played a lot of baseball. They’re our present and our future,” he said.
Ditlefsen said Mount Tahoma might not be as good as some Olympic League 2A teams, but the Thunderbirds did come in to Saturday’s game with a 4-0 record.
“[A no-hitter] was no easy accomplishment,” Ditlefsen said.
Meanwhile, the Wolves’ offense, shut out by Port Angeles last week, came alive, erupting for six runs in the third inning and five in the fourth.
Johnnie Young had a huge day at the plate with a double, a triple, a stolen base, two runs scored and three RBIs. Joey Oliver had two hits, a walk, two runs scored and an RBI.
Silas Thomas had a hit, a run scored and two RBIs, while Michael Young had a hit, a run and an RBI. Conner Bear had a hit, a run scored, an RBI and two walks and Michael Grubb had a hit, a walk and two runs scored.
Sequim (1-2, 4-3) next hosts Crosspoint in a nonleague game at 4:15 p.m. Tuesday.

PORT ANGELES — The Port Angeles Roughriders rallied with a four-run ninth inning to come from behind to nip Roosevelt 7-6 at Civic Field.
Tyler Bowen picked up the win Saturday on the mound, getting the final out in the top of the ninth. He also hit a grounder in the bottom of the ninth that scored the winning run when Roosevelt (also called the Roughriders) made an error on the ball.
Port Angeles actually rallied twice, scoring a run in the bottom of the seventh to force extra innings.
Daniel Basden, who had a big day overall, led off the seventh off with a double. He moved to third on a groundout and came in to score the tying run on an error.
After Roosevelt scored three runs in the top of the ninth to take a 6-3 lead, Basden again started the rally, getting on base on an error. Gavin Guerrero and Ethan Flodstrom walked and Milo Whitman came up with a clutch bases-loaded infield single to drive in a run. Lucas Jarnigan tied the game with a single, scoring Guerrero and Flodstrom.
Jarnigan then came in to score the winning run on the error on Bowen’s ball.
Port Angeles outplayed Roosevelt in the field, making just one error to Roosevelt’s four. Only one Port Angeles run ended up being earned.
Basden went 2 for 4 on the day, with three runs scored. Jarnigan had two RBIs. Flodstrom went 0 for 1 on the day, but got on base three times after walking twice and getting hit by a pitch.
On the mound, the trio of Brody Merritt, Seth Scofield and Jadon Seibel went the first five innings, giving up no runs on four hits and three walks, with five strikeouts.
Port Angeles (2-0, 4-3) returns to league play on Wednesday at Bremerton (0-3, 1-6).

Forks at Tiger Invite
BATTLE GROUND — Competing against 29 schools from two states, Forks’ Luke Dahlgren finished second in the discus with a personal-best distance of 149 feet, 2 inches.
That discus throw is the third-best so far this season in the entire state at the 1A level.
Dahlgren also finished eighth in the shot put at Saturday’s meet, with another personal-best put of 43 feet, 0 3/4 inches.
Dahlgren picked up his top 10 finishes despite competing against competitors from 21 2A and bigger schools.
Forks will next compete at an Evergreen 1A League meet at Montesano at 3:30 p.m. Thursday. Montesano, Hoquiam and Ocosta will all compete at this meet.
Softball
Riders swept by Ellensburg, E. Valley
BELLEVUE — The Port Angeles girls had a couple of rough losses at Bellevue Community College against Ellensburg and East Valley of Yakima.
The Roughriders lost to East Valley 12-7 and Ellensburg 16-3 on Friday. The Riders were locked up in a close battle with East Valley until the sixth inning, when the Red Devils scored six runs to blow the game open.
The second game against Ellensburg was tied 3-3 in the third inning when the Bulldogs scored six runs, then added seven more in the fourth. Walks hurt the Riders as their pitchers issued nine free passes to the Bulldogs.
Jada Acosta-Cargo had a good day for the Roughriders. In the two games combined, she was 5 for 6 with a double, a triple, three runs scored and four RBIs. Madison Roening had two doubles against Ellensburg, while Ella Holland hit a triple against East Valley. Lucah Folden was 3 for 4 on the day with a run scored and two RBIs.
Port Angeles (1-0, 2-3) will next play a league game at Bremerton on Wednesday.
