BREMERTON — Sequim controlled the match but couldn’t break through and score against a stacked defense in a 1-0 Olympic League boys soccer loss to Olympic on the road Tuesday night.
“We held possession 80 percent of the game and they held a seven-man back line, parking the bus, so to speak,” coach Dave Breckinridge said. “We were still able to break through their back line with some great decisions from Josh Alcaraz and Evan Cisneros, but unfortunately they were a little heavy on the delivery.”
Olympic scored off a rebound after sending in a long ball bouncing into the goal box in the 35th minute.
Breckenridge said senior Mekhi Ashby worked hard in the second half.
“Mehki had a strong second half with multiple shots under pressure that just didn’t find the net,” he said.
Sequim (1-1) hosts undefeated North Kitsap tonight.
North Mason 7, Port Angeles 1
BELFAIR — The Riders’ youth movement had a night to forget on the road Tuesday night, according to coach Chris Saari.
Playing seven freshmen and a number of sophomores, Port Angeles allowed two early North Mason goals, but did pull one back in the 17th minute when Oliver Martinez notched his first varsity goal.
“Defender Grant Butterworth took a long free kick and sophomore classmate Oliver Martinez headed the ball over the Bulldog goalkeeper’s head as the keeper came out,” Saari said.
“The Bulldogs were able to get a couple more goals before halftime. [We] had some defensive lapses and miscues and North Mason capitalized on their opportunities.”
Saari said the Riders missed out on a couple of opportunities after halftime.
“Jacob Weaver had a free kick that the Bulldog goalkeeper tipped off the crossbar and Oliver Martinez had a good chance with an empty net from a tough angle and was unable to cut the ball back enough to score,” Saari said.
Freshman Jordan Saluskin finished out the match in goal and Saari said he made a couple of good saves to keep the Bulldogs from adding on to the score.
Port Angeles (1-2-0, 2-3-0) hosts Olympic on Friday.

PUYALLUP — Rene Martin found the net for the Rivals in a road loss to the Nisqually League-leading Cougars.
East Jefferson (1-3, 1-4) hosts Klahowya tonight at 6 p.m. at Memorial Field.
Boys Golf Bainbridge 166, Port Angeles 186
BAINBRIDGE — The Riders played well at Wing Point Golf & Country Club but couldn’t knock off the Spartans on their home turf.
Cale Wentz led Port Angeles with a 6-over-par 36 on the front nine.
Reid Schmidt, Austin Worthington and Sky Gelder all shot rounds of 48 for the Riders.
Bainbridge’s Dane Byers was match medalist with a 38.
“It was a beautiful day to be on a golf course; yet a tough day to be in Bainbridge for us,” coach Bob Anderson said. “This is the last of our friendly matches. Now we play league matches, and we’ll see Bainbridge at home later in the season.”
North Kitsap 180, Sequim 195
SEQUIM — The Wolves played their best golf of the season in a nine-hole match with the Vikings at The Cedars at Dungeness.
Lars Wiker shot an 8-over-par 44 to pace Sequim, while teammate Cody Dunscomb posted a 47.
Joey Kang and Ryan Stites each shot 52 to round out the Wolves’ scores.
“Best showing of the year,” coach Greg Glasser said. “We were without our No. 1 player Adrian Aragon, Lars Wiker and Cody Dunscomb stepped up and played very well.”
The Wolves host Bainbridge today.
Girls Golf Sequim 208, North Kitsap 228
SEQUIM — Kendra Dodson and Taryn Johnson led the Wolves after shooting nine-hole rounds of 51 at The Cedars at Dungeness on Tuesday.
Emily Post and Ava Johnson each shot 53 to round out the Sequim scores.
North Kitsap’s Calia Corden was match medalist with a 47.
Sequim hosts Bainbridge today.
