PREP ROUNDUP: Sequim baseball one strike away from win; PA, Chimacum shut out

LACEY — The Sequim baseball team came within one out of beating Aberdeen on the road, but a two-out, two-run base hit on a 3-and-2 count in the bottom of the seventh sent the Wolves to an 8-7 defeat.

It was a see-saw affair Saturday with Sequim scoring two runs in the sixth inning to take a 7-6 lead. Michael Young hit a single in the inning to drive in Kyler Rollness, giving the Wolves the lead.

In the seventh, Young, now on the mound, got the first two Bobcat hitters out. But then Aberdeen got a single, a hit batsman and another single, then an error on a throw to score two runs.

The Wolves gave up just five hits but made five errors, allowing three unearned runs.

Young was 2 for 4 on the day with 3 RBIs. Silas Thomas was 1 for 3 with two RBIs, while Michael Grubb was 2 for 4 with a run. Conner Bear hit a double for Sequim, while Rollness stole two bases and scored two runs.

Caleb Pozernick started the game, giving up three earned runs in four innings on three hits. Young took the hard-luck loss, going 2 2/3rds inning and giving up two earned runs on two hits.

Olympic Peninsula diamond teams went 0-4 on Saturday, with Port Angeles shut out, Chimacum no-hit and Sequim softball falling 16-9 to Anacortes.

Sequim (0-1, 1-2) plays another nonleague game at Sammamish (2-1) at 4 p.m. today. The Wolves return to league play Wednesday, hosting North Mason (0-1, 2-3) at 4:15 p.m.

Lake Washington 2, Port Angeles 0

KIRKLAND — The Port Angeles baseball team got itself into a tight pitching duel with Lake Washington, as Roughrider pitchers only gave up three hits and zero walks on the day.

But, one of those hits was a home run and another was a double — and that runner came home to score later in the inning — as the Kangaroos beat the Riders 2-0 on Saturday.

The Riders duo of Hayden Woods and Timmy Adams pitched an outstanding game. Woods went 3 2/3rds innings, giving up three hits, no walks and one earned run on a home run. Adams went 2 1/3 innings, giving up no runs, no hits and no walks.

Neither team walked a batter, unusual for a high school game.

The Riders managed six hits but couldn’t get a timely hit to drive anyone home.

Joel Wood went 2 for 3 on the day. Gavin Guerrero, Bo Bradow, Lucas Jarnigan and Tyler Bowen all had singles.

Port Angeles (1-0, 2-2) next plays at 3A Bainbridge at 4 p.m. Monday and then returns to league play on Friday, hosting Sequim (0-1, 1-2) under the Civic Field lights at 6:30 p.m.

South Whidbey 4, Chimacum 0

LANGLEY — The Chimacum duo of Wyatt Pennington and Issac Purser pitched a solid game against South Whidbey.

Unfortunately for the Cowboys, they ran into a quartet of South Whidbey pitchers who fired a combined 7-inning no-hitter against Chimacum as the Falcons won 4-0 on Saturday.

Chimacum came into the contest averaging more than seven runs a game, so the Cowboys are not a light-hitting team. They simply got shut down.

Pennington went 4 2/3rds innings, giving up just four hits, three earned runs and striking out five with just one walk. Purser pitched 1 1/3, giving two hits, a walk, a run, while striking out two.

Pennington provided most of the offense for the Cowboys with two walks.

The Cowboys (0-0, 2-2) look to bounce back from the no-hitter, hosting Quilcene at home at 4:15 p.m. today.
