LACEY — Whew. Sequim came to the district softball tournament fired up and smashed Class 2A KingCo Conference champ Sammamish 21-1 Friday at the RAC to seal a berth to the state tournament next weekend in Selah.
The game was halted after just three innings due to the 20-point run differential.
No. 6-seed Sequim did much of the work right off the bat, taking advantage of five walks to plate eight first-inning runs.
Taylee Rome opened the scoring with a two-run triple, Mia Pozernick’s two-run double down the third-base line made it 5-0 and leadoff hitter Christy Grubb’s second turn at-bat resulted in a two-RBI double and an 8-0 lead.
Ten Wolves’ batters reached base before Sammamish recorded an out.
Rome and Pozernick each added home runs and Grubb reached base on an error and scored as the rout continued in the second and third innings.
Angel Wagner pitched well for Sequim, scattering three hits.
The Wolves will face No. 7 seed Fife in the district semifinals at 10 a.m. today.
Port Angeles 8, White River 2
LACEY — The top-seeded Roughriders (18-2) rolled out to an 8-0 lead, clinching a state tournament berth with a dominant win over the Hornets.
Lily Halberg belted a two-run home run in the first inning and Teagan Clark added an RBI single to help herself out in the circle. Clark earned the win, striking out 10 White River batters in a complete-game performance.
Peyton Rudd added a two-run double and Natalie Robinson pounded another double off the fence to bring home two more Riders for a 6-0 advantage.
Port Angeles also played well in the field with Lily Halberg making plays in right field and sister Emi robbing a potential three-run home run late.
The Riders will face fifth-seed Olympic (15-4) at 10 a.m. today.
Port Angeles split two regular-season games with the Trojans this season.
1B Quad-District Track
TACOMA — Ryana Moss qualified for state in three events to lead area athletes at the Class 1B Quad-District Track & Field Championships at Franklin Pierce High School on Thursday.
Moss had the highest individual finishes of area competitors, taking second in the 1,600-meter run with a personal-best time of 5 minutes, 48.20 seconds. She also set a personal record of 52.94 seconds while placing third in the 300 hurdles.
Moss also joined with Danika Perry, Wiinuk Martin and Cerise Moss to finish sixth in the 4×400 relay. The top eight individuals and teams advanced to the Class 1B state championships in Cheney next week.
Cerise Moss, Perry, Bethany McKee and Branndi Bowechop also qualified in the 4×100.
Bowechop also will throw the discus for the Red Devils after an eighth-place finish.
Crescent freshman Katelyn Dunavant was fourth in the discus with a personal record of 86-08.
Eighth-grader Naomii Sprague set three personal-best times while qualifying for state in three events.
Sprague was eighth in the 100 in 13.54, seventh in the 200 in 28.22 and seventh in the triple jump with a leap of 29 feet, 9.5 inches.
Crescent’s Conner Ferro-May finished third in the shot put with a distance of 38-04 while Titus White was fifth with a throw of 36-10.
Ferro-May also set a new distance record in the discus, finishing third with a throw of 118-04.
Neah Bay’s 4×100 relay team of Leonardo Ruiz-Santana, Jaden Halttunen, Devon Halttunen and Mahamadou Traore will run at state after a sixth-place finish.
