PREP ROUNDUP: Roughriders soccer goes 1-1 on the week

Roughriders fall late against 3A Ferndale 2-1

FERNDALE — Port Angeles girls soccer traveled to Ferndale on Saturday, falling to the Ferndale Golden Eagles 2-1. Ferndale, a top Class 3A program north of Bellingham, was able to get a late game winner moments after the Riders had evened the score.

The first half was a back and forth game, with both teams getting chances on goal but neither able to capitalize.

Halfway through the second half, Ferndale took the lead off of a corner kick that was directed in past the Rider defense.

Port Angeles (2-0-0, 4-1-0) rallied to tie the game when Millie Long beat her defender, crossed the ball and Brooklyn Alton was able to finish from close range.

Ferndale went ahead for good only 3 minutes later on a counterattack that started from their defenses and quickly ended up in the PA net.

“Their second goal was frustrating as we failed to stop the ball when we had a chance on their half of the field,” said coach Scott Moseley.

“The game was a good test for us in facing a playoff caliber, larger school with multiple skillful, fast and creative players,” he added.

The Roughriders outshot Ferndale 11-9 while Port Angeles goalie Madi Roening had 6 saves in a strong game in goal.

The Riders host North Mason on Tuesday at Civic field in a Olympic League game.

Port Angeles-Port Townsend

Port Angeles shutout Port Townsend 9-0 Thursday.

The Roughriders were able to break a scoreless deadlock after 13 minutes on a Krysten McGuffey goal, her seventh of the season.

“The Redhawks started the game well and were able to defend us as we worked on our attack,” said Port Angeles coach Scott Moseley.

“Many freshman and sophomores contributed to the win, scoring seven of the nine goals.”

Bergen Shamp, Mia Gagnon and Bailee Larsen had two each, their first career goals. Millie Long and Emma Albright had one each.

Goalkeeper Madi Roening had her third shutout of the young season, making three saves.

Port Townsend (1-4-0) visits rival Chimacum (0-1-0, 1-2-0) on Tuesday.
