KINGSTON — Millie Long notched her second-consecutive hat trick. The Port Angeles defense limited Kingston to zero shots on goal, and freshman Izzy Felton scored her first varsity goal in a 4-0 shutout of the Buccaneers.
It was the fourth straight win for Port Angeles (4-1) and kept the Riders in first place in the Olympic League North Division.
Kingston’s plan to limit Long’s effectiveness by packing their defense in and putting a follow defender on Long. But just as in the East Jefferson match last Saturday in which Long scored three goals, having a plan to stop Long and executing that plan are two different things.
Long found the net first in the fourth minute, booting a shot that hit the far post and deflected into the goal.
Port Angeles went up 2-0 in the 33rd when Long scored, assisted by what Riders coach Scott Moseley called “a beautiful pass” from Felton that split two defenders to find Long.
Long returned the favor to Felton in the second half, assisting on Felton’s first varsity score. The hat trick came in the 72nd minute when Long took a throw-in by Paige Mason, dribbled past three defenders and finished past a diving Kingston goalie.
“It was a nice win,” Moseley said. “It is pretty rare to hold a team to zero shots on goal — that takes a team effort.”
Moseley also praised the midfield play of Anna Petty and Bailee Larson.
“Those two midfielders really controlled the game, won the ball and distributed cleanly to our forwards,” he said.
At the end of the game, Long’s second hat trick in a row stood out.
“At one point, Kingston had five players on Millie, but she was still able to create space and serve a cross towards the goal. In spite of that attention, she was able to tally three,” Moseley said. “She is pretty special to watch.”
Port Angeles hosts Sequim this Saturday at Peninsula College. The Riders edged the Wolves 2-1 last Friday.

KINGSTON — The Roughriders fell on the road to the Olympic League North Division leading-Buccaneers 25-14, 28-30, 25-18, 25-20.
Junior outside hitter Emi Halberg and senior middle hitter Jaida Wood led the way for Port Angeles.
Halberg had six kills and two aces while Wood totaled seven kills, two digs and a block.
Junior setter Zoe Smithson added six digs, five blocks, three assists and a kill.
Senior Ava Brenkman recorded four kills and three blocks.
The Riders (2-3) host Sequim at 12:30 p.m. Saturday.

Raymond 3, Forks 1
RAYMOND — The Spartans received strong serving performances from Kray Horton and freshman Kaidence Rigby but couldn’t pick up a road win against the Seagulls.
Horton served 100 percent for the match and added 13 assists.
Rigby connected on 12 of 13 serve attempts.
“Kaidence Rigby served well for us last night as well,” Forks coach Jenn LeDuke said.
LeDuke said the Spartans received strong on-court leadership from Colbie Rancourt during the match.
“It was good to see her take on that role,” LeDuke said.
Rancourt said the team showed improvement.
“I felt our overall play improved, and we all felt the high energy in the first set, which really helped us win the first one.”
Kyra Neel added six kills, three blocks and two service aces.
Kadie Wood had five kills for Forks while Kesia Rowley added two aces, two assists and a kill.
Forks (1-3) hosts Northwest Christian tonight.
