BELFAIR – The Port Angeles Roughriders football team had its biggest offensive output of the year, winning its second straight game 48-25 over North Mason on Friday night.
With the win, the Riders may have a chance to qualify for district playoffs. They hope to hear Sunday.
Coach Dustin Clark said quarterback Parker Nickerson made some great throws all game, as a leg he injured earlier this season is getting better every week.
Nickerson finished the game 11-for-16 with 264 yards and four touchdowns, easily his best game of the year.
“Parker was feeling really good,” Clark said.Kason Albaugh ran the ball 18 times for 103 yards.
Nickerson hit Alex Angevine with a 25-yard touchdown pass, while Blake Sohlberg had a catch-and-run for 50 yards and another touchdown on a 20-yard pass. Albaugh also had a 12-yard touchdown run and Jason Hawes scored a touchdown on a catch and another on a 61-yard punt return. It was his second straight game with a punt return for a TD.
Sohlberg ended up with six catches for 142 yards. Ezra Townsend had a 36-yard catch and Hawes had 61 yards receiving on three catches.
“Our defense played great. They were flying all around the ball. The defense hasn’t been a problem the last four or five games,” Clark said.
With the pair of wins to finish the regular season, the Riders now have to sit and wait to see if they made district playoffs as a wild card.
Bremerton 36, Sequim 29
SEQUIM — Bremerton came out on top of a close game against Sequim.
Coach Erik Wiker said the Wolves led much of the game. “We played supper well,” he said.
Aiden Gockerell led the Wolves with 120 yards rush. Lars Wiker had a great game with 236 yards passing and three passing touchdowns. He had 47 yards rushing and a rushing TD.
Aidan Holland led Sequim with 11 tackles, while Gockerell had 10 tackles. Faas Christiansen had eight tackles and Sam Fitzgerald seven tackles.
Girls soccer
Vashon 3, East Jefferson 2, OT
VASHON — The East Jefferson girls soccer team’s season came to a heartbreaking loss with a loser-out playoff overtime 3-2 loss to Vashon.
Vashon beat East Jefferson 9-0 a few weeks ago, but coach Robert Cantley said that “was a different day and a different game.”
“I’m tremendously proud of them. We played beyond ourselves,” Cantley said. “We put in a really good performance. It was disappointing to end so early.”
As far as the scoring, East Jefferson struck first when Ava Shiflett was fouled in the box. Leah Harrison took the panelty kick and “tucked it away,” said Cantley, giving the Rivals a 1-0 lead.
Vashon got an equalizer right before the end of the half to make it 1-1 at the break. In the second half, heavy fog rolled in and the field became wet. Cantley said girls were slipping and falling all over the field and Vashon caught a break when a wet ball got through the gloves of the Rivals’ keeper, giving the Pirates a 2-1 lead.
The Rivals got an equalizer of their own when Shifflett put in a through ball, Kaylin Pray made a back pass to Iris Mattern and Mattern “buried a spectacular shot in the upper right corner.”
Vashon was able to knock in a loose ball in front of the Rivals’ net near the end of the first overtime to win in sudden death.
