PORT ANGELES — The Port Angeles girls swim team turned in a powerful performance this weekend, easily defeating Kingston and East Jefferson at home. The Roughriders outscored Kingston 138-24 and East Jefferson 127-44, winning every relay event and sweeping a number of individual races.
In the relay events, the Riders set the tone early with a commanding win in the 200-yard medley relay. The team of Brooke St. Luise, Lizzy Shaw, Amayah Nelson and Danika Asgeirsson finished 13 seconds ahead of their closest competitors.
Port Angeles continued to dominate with the 200-yard freestyle relay team of Damun Seera, Mia Francis, Lynzee Reid and Emerson DuBois claiming first place. Another Roughriders team of Grace Williams, Shavari Epps, Lucy Townsend and Dorothy Fettermann secured second place, finishing 10 seconds ahead of the field.
Port Angeles showed their strength once again in the 400-yard freestyle relay, with all three Riders teams finishing ahead of the opposition. The first-place squad, featuring Nelson, Asgeirsson, Shaw and St. Luise, sealed a flawless day in the relays.
In individual events, Nelson led the way in the 200-yard freestyle, taking first with a personal best, shaving four seconds off her previous time. Asgeirsson followed in second with a personal record and Shaw came in third, with all three swimmers securing district-qualifying times.
The Riders swept the 100-yard butterfly, with Chloe Kay-Sanders winning the event and earning a district-qualifying time. Asgeirsson took second with a 7-second personal best and Mia Francis rounded out the top three.
In the 100-yard freestyle, St. Luise claimed victory with a 2-second personal best and a district-qualifying time, highlighting her strong meet.
The distance race of the day, the 500-yard freestyle, saw DuBois finish second, while Kay-Sanders earned third with an impressive 13-second personal best.
Nelson returned to the top of the podium in the 100-yard backstroke, finishing first with a district time and a 4-second personal best. Reid was second, also earning a district-qualifying time and a personal record.
The most thrilling race of the meet came in the 100-yard breaststroke, where St. Luise faced fierce competition from East Jefferson’s Akeyla Behrenfeld. The two were locked in a tight battle from the start, but St. Luise managed to pull ahead in the final moments, winning by a narrow margin and securing both a personal best and a district-qualifying time.
In diving, Reid clinched first place for Port Angeles, earning high marks with consistent “6s” across the board for her forward 1½ somersault in pike. Erica Mack, East Jefferson’s diving coach, praised Reid’s confidence and consistency, calling her the most composed diver she has seen this season.
The Roughriders will head to Bremerton on Wednesday.
Girls soccer
East Jefferson 1, South Whidbey 1
CHIMACUM — The East Jefferson girls soccer team got a first-half goal from Eliana Anderson and the score held up in a nonleague 1-1 draw with South Whidbey.
“Ellie latched on to a ball in front of the net,” said coach Robert Cantley. He said Rayna Pray forced the issue on the play and picked up the assist.
After the goal tied the match at 1-1, the teams went scoreless afterward. Cantley said the Rivals have struggled with injuries and while some players have returned to the lineup, he wasn’t able to substitute in the second half and bring more energy into the game.
Cantley said the team’s defense played well with Teri Wiley playing a strong game in the center defense and Olivia McClemans a solid game at center mid. He said goalkeeper Rylee Spainhower-Oas made a couple of strong saves to preserve the tie.
The Rivals (1-5-1) now have a full week off and host The Bush School next Saturday in Chimacum.
Girls volleyball
Shoreline Christian 3, Crescent 2
JOYCE — Crescent played Shoreline Christian this weekend with a 3-2 (25-14, 15-25, 25-21, 20-25, 9-15) loss.
Katelyn Dunavant had six kills, eight digs and four blocks. Hayden Horn served 100 percent with 17 assists and nine digs.
Ashly Lium had seven kills, eight digs, and two blocks. Naomii Sprague had three kills and 23 digs.
The Loggers next play a league game Thursday night against Clallam Bay.
