POULSBO — The Port Angeles trio of Elijah Flodstrom, Kole Acker and Blake Sohlberg combined for a seven-hit shutout against a future Oregon State pitcher, topping Olympic League rival North Kitsap in a nine-inning 1-0 pitchers’ duel Monday.
It was the second shutout of the year for the Roughriders baseball team as Port Angeles (3-1) remained near the top of the Olympic League standings along with Bainbridge (4-0) and North Kitsap (4-1). Flodstrom was part of that first shutout against Bremerton in the season opener.
And the Riders did it by beating Noah Sorensen, who has committed to play for the Beavers, who are not only a Pac-12 power, but a national NCAA power in baseball.
The Riders won despite only getting two hits. Sorensen started for the Vikings, going eight innings and allowing one hit while striking out 12.
Flodstrom, Acker and Sohlberg managed to outduel him. In addition to their gem, the Roughriders made no errors on defense.
Flodstrom went three innings and gave up two hits while striking out one, picking up the victory. Acker went five innings, giving up five hits and striking out four. Sohlberg picked up the save, pitching the ninth inning and striking out two. With the tying run on first base after a walk, he got the final out on a fly ball.
The Riders scored their lone run in the top of the ninth. Flodstrom got on board with a single and moved to second on a sacrifice by Ezra Townsend. Colton Romero was intentionally walked to create a force play at third base.
Flodstrom stole third base and the throw from the pitcher to third was wild. Flodstrom was able to come around to score on the error with the ball going down the line.
“To win a game like that, everything has to go right,” said Port Angeles coach Zac Moore. “You have to find a way to score runs. Elijah was able to make something happen.”
Acker had the Riders’ other single.
Port Angeles (3-1, 3-2) had a rematch with North Kitsap (4-1, 4-4) — with Sorensen likely not available after his eight-inning effort Monday — Tuesday after press deadline. The Riders next play at Central Kitsap on Saturday.
Bellevue Christian 12, East Jefferson 1
CHIMACUM — The East Jefferson Rivals had nine hits but could only push one run across against Bellevue Christian on Monday.
The Rivals’ Brody Moore went 3-for-3 at the plate, while Rhian Popp hit 2-for-3 with a run scored. Cash Holmes was 2-for-3. Nate Naylor and Rylan Dunn also had hits for East Jefferson.
On the mound, Sean Jones started, going three innings and giving up three hits and one earned run. He struck out three. Moore pitched 2â…”, giving up three hits and five earned runs while striking our four. Evan Kraft pitched the final 2â…“, allowing four hits and four earned runs.
Girls tennis
Port Angeles 7, Kingston 0
PORT ANGELES — The Port Angeles girls tennis team swept Kingston 7-0 with singles player Liberty Lauer and four doubles teams all winning in straight sets.
Lauer didn’t surrender a game in her 6-0, 6-0 win. The doubles team of Cindy Liang-Gweneth Van Blair won 6-0, 6-1. Waverly Mead and Bella Artis won 6-1, 6-2.
Sarah Hancock and Bridget Weed won their match 6-2, 6-2, and the No. 4 doubles team of Kayla Jones and Summer Hirst-Lowe won 6-0, 6-0.
Port Angeles (3-1) played Tuesday at North Kitsap (2-1) after press deadline. The Roughriders next play at Sequim (1-3) at 4 p.m. today.
Sequim 4, Olympic 3
BREMERTON — The Sequim girls tennis team got a total sweep from its doubles teams to edge Olympic 4-3.
Olympic won all the singles matches, but Sequim dominated the doubles play.
The team of Sydney Hegtvedt and Dani Herman won a very tough match 6-3, 6-7, 6-4 (4-3). The duo of Sydney Thomas Harris and Kendall Day won a three-set match as well, 6-3, 4-6, 6-2.
The team of Keira Morey and Kristine Prorok won 6-4, 6-4, while Azlyne Judd and Taylor Heyting won 6-1, 6-4.
Singles players Calleigh Thompson, Tiffany Lam and Payton Smithson all lost in straight sets to their Olympic opponents.
Boys soccer
Raymond 2, Forks 1 (Penalty kicks)
FORKS — The Forks boys soccer team played its best game of the year Monday, taking Raymond to a shootout before falling 5-4 in penalty kicks.
“This was our first game of the year where I felt like they were starting to figure things out,” said coach Ismael Ramos. “Our first few games, there was a lot of miscommunication, not a lot of trust. We really turned it around completely. I’m really proud of them.”
The Spartans got their goal in the second half on a free kick from 20 yards out by Jesus Garcia Dominguez. The game was still tied 1-1 after overtime.
Jesus Ayala, Nova Raupp, Arturo Dominguez and DeAnthony Davila all made penalty kicks for the Spartans, but one miss was the difference.
Unfortunately for the Spartans, unlike the Olympic League, they don’t collect a point for taking a game to PKs.
The Spartans (0-5) next host Elma (3-1, 4-3) at 6 p.m. Wednesday.
Track and Field
Sequim at Bainbridge
BAINBRIDGE — The Sequim boys and girls track team competed at a three-way with Bainbridge and North Mason on Monday with the Wolves’ relay teams doing especially well.
The girls 4×200 relay team of Hi’ilei Robinson, Kaitlyn Bloomenrader, Emma Bergmann and Katie Morris won with a time of 2 minutes, 1.33 seconds.
The girls 4Ă—400 (Bloomenrader, Aspen Goldner, Dawn Hulstedt and Nikoline Updike) also won in a time of 4:47.27.
The boys 4Ă—100 relay team (Mirek Skov, Andrew Brown, Sean Southard and Ayden Humphries) won in a time of 46.60 seconds.
Skov and Brown had outstanding individual meets. Brown, who went to the 2A state meet last year in the hurdles, won the 110-meter hurdles in a time of 16.55 and the 300-meter hurdles in a time of 46.03. He was also second in the high jump at 5 feet, 8 inches.
Skov won the pole vault with a height of 13-6, was second in the discus (103-9) and second in the 100 meters (12.21).
Southard won the 800 meters in a time of 2:14.74.
For the Sequim girls, Morris won the 200 meters in a time of 29.0, while Hulstedt won the 1,600 in a time of 6:21.46.
Amara Brown was second in the high jump with a leap of 4-4 and Krista Charters was second in the shot put with a distance of 23-0.
The Bainbridge boys (94.5 points) and girls (86) both won. The Sequim girls were second at 48 points while the boys were third at 34.5 points.
