POULSBO — Port Angeles suffered its first dual meet loss of the season against North Kitsap, but Roughrider relay teams bettered their state qualifying times in both the 200 medley relay and the 400 freestyle relay.
Nadia Cole also improved her state qualifying times in the 200 individual medley and the 100 breaststroke, winning both events. She won the 200 IM with a time of 2 minutes, 16.54 seconds, while she won the 100 breaststroke in 1:10.59.
Meanwhile, Felicia Che improved her state qualifying times in the 200 IM and the 100 butterfly. Che won the 100 butterfly with a time of 1:01.81.
North Kitsap ended with 104.5 points to Port Angeles’ 64.5.
Port Angeles (2-1, 3-1) next competes at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday against Bainbridge.
Girls Soccer
Sequim 1, North Kitsap 0
POULSBO — The Wolves picked up a road shutout over the Vikings on the strength of an Adare McMinn goal assisted by sophomore Daisy Ryan.
“It was an incredible game to witness as [we] frustrated the Vikings all 80 minutes,” Sequim coach Derek Vander Velde said of Thursday’s game. “The girls possessed the ball extremely well and were able to find a few spaces to keep NK on their heels. [Goal]keeper Claire Henninger made some spectacular saves that helped keep [us] in the game.”
Henninger made 12 saves in goal.
Vander Velde had praise for the performances by Henninger, freshman Mary McAleer and sophomore Hope Glasser.
Sequim (2-1, 4-2) hosts rival Port Angeles on Tuesday at 6:45 p.m.
Olympic 1, Port Angeles 0
PORT ANGELES — The Roughriders dominated on the field but not on the scoreboard, falling to the league leading Trojans at home on Thursday.
Port Angeles had chances early with shots from Emilia Long and Sierra Robinson.
Robinson sent a 15-yard shot off the cross bar in the 15th minute off a Delaney Wenzl pass, but could not find the back of the net.
Olympic took the lead off of a corner kick that went in following a defensive miscue.
The Riders continued to dominate, limiting the Trojans to only three shots overall in the game, while pouring on 21 shots for the game, 11 on goal.
Robinson, Long and midfielder Kyrsten McGuffey all had shots on goal that were saved by the Olympic netminder.
“Soccer can be a cruel game. We had control of the game but couldn’t punch one through. The girls deserved a better result and we were all frustrated not to get the win,” said Riders coach Scott Moseley. “We threw a lot of offense at them and sometimes it is just not your night.”
Moseley said the Port Angeles defense continued to play quality soccer, having allowed only 1 goal in the last 4 games.
Moseley named Robinson as his offensive player of the game, Cheyenne Wheeler as transition player of the game and Kennedy Mason as defensive player.
The Riders (2-1, 3-3) visit rival Sequim on Tuesday.
Volleyball

QUILCENE — The Rangers won their sixth straight match of the year with a 3-0 nonleague sweep over Clallam Bay.
The Rangers won Friday by a score of 25-8, 25-10, 25-7. Katrina Love had seven kills, seven digs and eight aces while serving 23 for 24. Emily Hitt had five kills and four aces while serving 12 for 12. Abbygael Weller added seven digs and Allanah Carron six digs.
“The Rangers played strong against Clallam Bay and … have greatly improved their coverage of the hitters as well as anticipating tips. [Our] focus will move to continuing to improve defense as well as strengthening our right side hitting, with the addition of McKenzie Kieffer to our lineup. Our offense is working well and I am happy to see our kills being spread throughout the team. With a lot of options it is harder to defend against,” said coach Joni Crowell.
On Thursday, the Rangers rolled past Seattle Lutheran in a three-set sweep 25-9, 25-15, 25-5 in SeaTac League play.
Crowell said her team played hard in Thursday’s win.
“Our covering the tip is much improved and we are using more of our hitting options each game,” she said. “McKenzie Kieffer played in her first game, moving Pearl Munn to libero to help improve both our offense and our defense. Emily [Hitt] and Katie [Love] continue to be strong at the net, with Abby Weller adding in strong serving.
Hitt totaled 10 kills, 4 digs, two assists and served nine of nine with two aces.
Love added 10 digs, seven kills and was 17 of 17 on serve with four aces.
Weller served 19 for 20 with six aces and added three kills and five digs on the outside.
Pearl Munn went 12 for 12 on serve with four aces and four digs, Madison Coffey added four kills and setter Allanah Carron went 12 for 13 on serve with three aces along with 11 assists and four digs.
Quilcene (4-0, 6-0) next plays at 6 p.m. Wednesday against Crosspoint.
Olympic 3, Port Angeles 1
PORT ANGELES — The Roughriders tied up the match at one-set apiece but couldn’t sustain the momentum and fell 25-21, 16-25, 25-17, 25-19 to the Trojans at home Thursday.
Setter Natalie Steinman had a solid game for Port Angeles, dishing out 22 assists and leading the team in kills with seven.
Aeverie Politika added six kills for Port Angeles and Michelle Alvarez served 10 for 10 with three aces. Devin Edwards had five kills and Hannah Reetz and Ava Brenkman totaled four kills apiece.
Haley Becker was 18 for 21 on serve with two aces.
Brennan Gray led the team in digs with 18.
Boys Tennis
Sequim 7, Chimacum 0
SEQUIM — The Wolves swept the Cowboys in a home match Thursday.
Thomas Hughes and Tim Porter won via tiebreaker in the closest contested match, No. 1 doubles, knocking off J.J. Klaric and Jonah Diehl 7-5, 7-6 (7-1).
Sequim coach Mark Textor named No. 1 Blake Wiker and No. 3 singles player Sam Frymyer as his players of the match.
The Wolves (3-2, 5-2) host league-leading North Kitsap (6-0, 6-0) on Monday.

PORT ANGELES — The Riders earned an Olympic League win over the Bulldogs.
“We were able to field a couple of brother/brother teams, and a number of the new players this year had the opportunity to play their first varsity match,” Riders coach Gil Stockton said. “It was great fun to watch the enthusiasm and to see young men who had never played tennis before this year win their first varsity matches.
“Needless to say, there were a number of happy campers who walked off the courts this evening.
Stockton handed out team balls to the doubles duo of Dru Clark and Chase Cobb.
“They won their first set, but were down in the second 5-4, and could’ve let the match get away but they refused to let that happen,” Stockton said. “They came back and won three straight games to win the second set 7-5 and the match.”
The Riders (4-2, 5-2) visit Chimacum on Monday.
