PARKLAND — The Port Angeles wrestling team placed sixth out of 17 teams at the Patriot Dome Classic with Kenny Soule taking first at 152 pounds.
Fellow Roughriders Riley Gale (160 pounds), Daniel Basden (120 pounds) and Andrew St. George (126 pounds) all took third in their weight classes in Saturday’s meet.
Scott Hedin (113 pounds), Adam Borde (120 pounds) and Glenn Deckard took fifth-place medals.
In the JV tournament, Jason Kibe took home a first-place medal at 138 pounds and Derrick Dunaway took third at 160 pounds.
The Riders wrestle at 7 p.m. today at North Mason.
Port Townsend at Return of the Seahawk
SEATTLE — The Port Townsend wrestling squad took second place at the Return of the Seahawk meet at Chief Sealth High School.
Redhawks Jesus Javier Duran (138 pounds) and Carter Swartout (113 pounds) took first in their weight classes. It was Swartout’s first meet championship.
Meanwhile, four Redhawks finished third in their weight classes — Gabe Petrick (160 pounds), Ryan Caldwell (182 pounds), Kyle Caldwell (195) and Tucker Booth (285 pounds).
Girls Wrestling Port Townsend at Emerald Ridge
PUYALLUP — The Port Townsend girls finished 21st at the Emerald Ridge Invitational with six Redhawks finishing second or third.
Jamie Rogers finished second at 190 pounds. All finishing third in their weight classes were Cyan Adams (125 pounds), Aziliz Dupont-Hin (130 pounds), Kalista Hill (135 pounds), Veda Dosey (140 pounds) and Brenna Franklin (170 pounds).
“We were extremely proud of our wrestlers in their first competition. Both the boys and girls dominated in their weight classes,” said coach Steve Grimm.
“I am expecting to surprise some teams this year. We got a young group on paper, but they don’t wrestle like it. They all have great attitudes and understand what it takes to win. Our seniors our doing a good job of mentoring,” Grimm said.
The Redhawks were missing a few wrestlers last weekend, but have 26 athletes out for wrestling, including 12 girls, the largest team at Port Townsend in years.
Boys Basketball
Vashon 79, Chimacum 20
CHIMACUM — Missing four out of five starters, the Chimacum basketball boys struggled in a 79-20 loss to Vashon on Saturday.
“It was a very tough start to the season,” said coach Jeff Williams.
Bradley Slagle led the Cowboys with 5 points while Jess Slagle had five points.
Chimacum (0-2) played at Charles Wright on Monday after press deadline. The Cowboys next play at Port Townsend at 7:15 p.m. Friday.
