MATLOCK — The Quilcene Rangers got a monster game from sophomore Bishop Budnek, which included a school-record 99-yard touchdown run, in beating Mary M. Knight 58-24 in their season opener.
Budnek, taking over for Rangers’ workhorse Olin Reynolds, who graduated, ran 10 times for 241 yards. He scored four TDs
“That’s the best football game he’s ever had,” said coach Trey Beathard. Budnek had TD runs of 5, 1, 99 and 45 yards. He also scored five point after touchdowns and caught a pass for 22 yards.
The Rangers had 414 yards rushing and 511 yards of total offense. Chase Newman had a good game, rushing for 71 yards on four carries, including a 35-yard touchdown, while Isaac Dugdale had 50 yards rushing on four carries. He had a 25-yard touchdown run. Ashton Smead had a 27-yard touchdown run.
At quarterback, Holdem Elkins passed for 97 yards on 4 for 13 passing. Zach Budnek had a 40-yard catch.
Bishop Budnek’s 99-yard score was set up by a Newman fumble recovery on the 1-yard-line. On the very next play, Budnek broke a couple of tackles and scampered the entire length of the field for a touchdown.
It isn’t possible to have a 100-yard run from scrimmage, so Budnek’s play is a school record.
Beathard said that beyond the stats sheet, Max Redmon played well on the offensive line and Jacob Miller played a good game at guard.
On defense Zach Budnek had 14 tackles and Kevin Alejo had nine tackles, mostly on special teams. Cash Thacker had eight tackles and an interception, while Jeremy Allen had an interception. Kristian Mack had a fumble recovery.
The defending SeaTac 1B champion Rangers next play Crescent at home at 1 p.m. Saturday.

Seton Catholic 19, Chimacum 8
VANCOUVER — The Chimacum Cowboys got a couple of bad breaks early, but hung tough with Seton Catholic, falling 19-8 on the road.
Anson Jones had a huge game for the Cowboys, rushing for 112 yards on 27 carries. He had a touchdown and the PAT for Chimacum. He also had a reception for 13 yards.
“[Jones] was exactly what we thought he should be,” said coach Chris Storm.
Storm said that Jones ran over defenders and also got a lot of help from Chimacum’s huge front line anchored by Jacob Williamson.
“We lost a fumble on a play where we thought the runner was down and that changed the momentum,” Storm said.
Storm said the Cowboys won the second half of the game and that he was pleased with how the defense played, especially after how much the defense struggled last season.
“After a four-hour drive and having such a young team, it’s hard for to say that we lost that game,” said Storm. “Defensively, we did very well. It was closer than the score showed.”
Carson McConnell also had an interception for the Cowboys, while quarterback Clayton Smith threw for 56 yards. Bjorn Danaan caught three passes for 43 yards.
Chimacum (0-1) plays at home at 6:30 p.m. Friday against Tenino from the Evergreen 1A League.

Girls Soccer Sequim 1, Lakewood 1
SEQUIM — For the second straight year, the Sequim Wolves have played Lakewood in a preleague match. And for the second straight year, the Wolves and Cougars played to a 1-1.
Not just the same result. The same exact score.
Wolves’ coach Derek Vandevelde was happy with how his team, which was missing a number of starters, played.
Four girls filled in for starters — sophomores Payton Johnson and Zoe Moore and JV players Alliyah Weber and Svea Sparks.
“They did a really good job,” he said.
“It’s nice to see what level we’re at and nice to see what other girls can do,” he said.
Daisy Ryan had the Wolves’ goal.
Sequim next plays at 6 p.m. Tuesday hosting 1A powerhouse Klahowya. The Eagles will likely be joining Sequim and Port Angeles at the 2A level next year.
