PREP ROUNDUP: Quilcene baseball wins again in eighth inning

QUILCENE — The Quilcene Rangers baseball team won its second game of the year in extra innings, scoring two runs in the eighth to get past Crosspoint 5-3.

With the win, the Rangers improved to 4-0 on the season.

The duo of Eli Allen and Oliver Hopkins allowed just four hits and struck out eight. Allen started, going five innings, allowing two hits and three earned runs. Hopkins picked up the win going the final three, allowing two hits, no runs and striking out three.

The Rangers got the go-ahead runs in the eighth when they loaded the bases on a couple of walks and a hit batsman. Logan Carstensen hit a bases-loaded single to make the score 4-3 and Quilcene picked up an insurance run on an error.

In the bottom of the eighth, Hopkins struck out the first two batters he faced, then allowed a single. Allen, playing catcher, ended the game when he made a pickoff throw to first to nab the Crosspoint baserunner.

Carstensen finished the game with two RBIs, while Jacob Minish scored two runs and Jayden Tirao hit a double.

Quilcene (4-0) played Evergreen Lutheran on Tuesday and next hosts Muckleshoot at 4:15 p.m. Friday.

SEQUIM — The Sequim softball team was beaten by No. 6-ranked North Kitsap 18-2 at home.

Mia Kirner was a bright spot for the Wolves with a double and two RBIs. Kylie Winter and Hannah Giddings also had hits. Rylin Whitehead pitched the entire game, allowing 12 hits and nine earned runs. She struck out two.

Sequim (0-4, 1-6) next plays at Bremerton (0-4, 0-7) on Thursday.
