PORT TOWNSEND — Port Townsend’s Nathan Cantrell outsprinted Sequim’s Murray Bingham at the finish line to claim a boys cross country meet individual win, but the Wolves (30 points) won the team portion of the meet over the Redhawks (35) and Olympic (61) at Port Townsend Golf Club on Wednesday.
Cantrell kicked past Bingham over the final 60 feet of the race to finish the 2-mile course in 10 minutes, 31 seconds and edge out Bingham (10:31.6). Gabe Petrick finished fourth for Port Townsend with a time of 10:55.
Sequim’s Liam Byrne (11:02), Eli Gish (11:07) and Jazen Bartee (11.14) placed fifth, sixth and seventh, respectively, for the Wolves.
Seamus Fraser (11:23) and Kincaid Gould (11:28) were eighth and ninth for Port Townsend, and Sequim’s Riley Martin rounded out the top 10 for Sequim in 11:32.
In the girls race, Port Townsend’s Ally Bradley (13:31), Anika Avelino (13:38), Aliyah Parsons (14:20) and Rachel Matthes (14:28) swept the top four positions as the Redhawks (26) ran past Olympic (42) and Sequim (58).
The Wolves’ top finish came from seventh-place runner Kaitlyn Viada (15:24). Vita Olson was ninth in 15:36 and Jessica German 10th in 15:44 for Sequim.
Port Townsend will run at Saturday’s 11th annual Twilight Invitational at Cedarcrest Golf Course.
Sequim will run Saturday at the 22nd annual Curtis Cross Country Invitational at Chambers Creek in University Place.
Port Angeles vs. North Mason and Kingston
KINGSTON — Gracie Long and Lauren Larson finished first and second respectively to lead the Roughrider girls to a 23-34 meet win over Kingston at White Horse Golf Club.
Meanwhile, the Port Angeles boys fell to the host Buccaneers 21-34, with North Mason finishing third with 79 points.
Running the rolling hills of the course in sunny, 75-degree weather, Riders cross country coach Rodger Johnson said “the PA Girls looked strong, led by senior Gracie Long, who was two full minutes ahead of the first runner in from another school.”
Long finished the race with a time of 20 minutes, 42.4 seconds. Larson was next in 21:56.7.
“It was a really warm day and a hilly course. To get through it I focused on the end and finished strong,” Larson said.
Freshman Kathryn Guttormsen finished seventh for Port Angeles.
“This course challenged us mentally and physically, but by the end I blocked out the heat and the pain and ran hard for the finish,” Guttormsen said.
Clallam Bay’s Kaylin Signor was 19th with a time of 26:47.5.
In the boys race, Gabriel Long led the Riders with a fourth-place finish in 18:49.4, narrowly edging out teammate Thomas Shaw (18:52.3).
Shaw echoed the remarks of many who play golf at White Horse, which is renowned as a tough track.
“This was a challenging course,” Shaw said. “Even the downhill was hard.”
“The PA boys ran hard and looked great,” Johnson said. “Unfortunately, it wasn’t enough to take down the runners from Kingston. We look forward to seeing them again, they gave us some tough competition that we hope to match by the end of the season.”
The Riders will run at the 22nd annual Curtis XC Invitational at Chambers Creek in University Place on Saturday.

SEQUIM — The Wolves claimed all four doubles matches to squeak past the Buccaneers (4-5) in an Olympic League match.
Sequim coach Mark Textor named Thomas Hughes and Kevin Meyer as his players of the match for their play in the No. 1 and No. 3 doubles matches, respectively.
Sequim (4-3) hosts Bremerton (2-3) on Monday.

BREMERTON — The Roughriders stayed focused and came out with a solid Olympic League victory on the road against the Knights.
Port Angeles won all three matches that went to a third set.
“Jadon Seibel went three sets and, after losing the first set, played good, smart, steady tennis to win his match,” Riders coach Gil Stockton said.
“He kept his composure and played each point one at a time to outlast his opponent. He is gaining greater confidence with each match he plays. In addition, Evan Cobb and Wyatt Hall worked hard for three sets to come out on top in the third-set tiebreaker.
“The team ball though, goes to Kyler Tourbin and Brady Nickerson for their three-set victory over their opponents. What was great to see was how they decided to hang tough and beat the opponents who had beaten them earlier in the season. They dropped the first set and could’ve easily folded their tents but they came back to win their first number one doubles match of the season. It was through sheer determination and grit they came out on top.”
Port Angeles (5-2, 6-2) hosts Olympic (1-5, 2-5) on Monday.
