PORT TOWNSEND — Port Townsend’s Gabe Petrick and Nathan Cantrell outran athletes from Port Angeles and Bremerton to claim the top two spots in a three-team cross country race at Port Townsend Golf Club on Wednesday.
Petrick and Cantrell each finished the 5-kilometer (3.1-mile) race in 17 minutes, 53 seconds, boosting the Redhawks to 29 points to narrowly edge Port Angeles (30) and Bremerton (69) for the meet win.
“The entire boy’s race was led by two runners from Port Townsend, who set a tough pace for the Port Angeles runners to try and match,” Roughriders coach Rodger Johnson said.
“Junior Gabe Long and sophomore Thomas Shaw stayed an arm’s length apart the entire race just behind the PT leaders, finishing the race with a 10- meter sprint — Shaw edging out Long for third place by a hair.”
Shaw and Long were each clocked at 18:07.
Port Townsend’s Seamus Fraser was fifth in 18:37 and Kincaid Gould ninth with a time of 19:16.
“The rest of the top boys finishers [for Port Angeles] were Adam Borde, Cameron Butler, Dane Deming, AJ Fischer, and Logan Tyson, Johnson said. “Dane Deming is coming on strong this year, moving up from JV just last week.”
Eight Riders’ girls finished in the top 10 as Port Angeles cruised to a win with 16 points, while Port Townsend finished with 47. Bremerton did not have enough runners to total a team score.
Fresh off a Salt Creek Invitational victory, the Riders’ Gracie Long won the girls race in 20:41, 10 seconds better than freshman teammate Lauren Larson.
Madelyn Dougherty was third with a time of 21:23 and Ella Holland fourth in 21:58.
“All girls on the team have shown improvement this year, but no one has been dropping time faster than Lauren,” Johnson said. “Madelyn Dougherty, Ella Holland, Kathryn Guttormsen, Alissandra Baccus, and Ellie Hiigel finished off the varsity girls squad with great times.”
Ally Bradley posted the best time for Port Townsend, finishing fifth in 22:16.
The Riders will race at the Bellevue Invitational on Saturday at Sammamish State Park.
Port Townsend hosts Olympic and Sequim on Wednesday at Port Townsend Golf Club.
Sequim at North Kitsap meet
POULSBO — Murray Bingham won the boys race for the Wolves in 15:07 and teammate Liam Byrne was third in 15:31 as Sequim finished second in a 2.75-mile, three-team meet against North Kitsap and Kingston.
Eli Gish (16:04), Riley Martin (16:07) and Alec Shingleton (16:09) were 12th, 13th and 14th for Sequim, respectively.
On the girls side, Kaitlyn Viada was the Wolves’ top finisher, coming in 12th in 21:39. Vita Olson finished 14th with a time of 21:57 and Emily Silva was 16th in 22:55.
Boys Tennis
Port Angeles 5, Kingston 2
KINGSTON — The Roughriders “played some great tennis,” according to coach Gil Stockton and earned a road win against the Buccaneers.
“There were quite a few good, long points, great rallies and consistent good shots,” Stockton said.
“Hayden Woods won his seventh straight match and played a brilliant game of tennis. The Roughrider junior varsity doubles teams of Tanner Price/Caleb Flodstrom, Dru Clark/Chase Cobb, and Kamron Noard/Landon Seibel also gained greater confidence with good play as they played hard against guys they will be playing for the years to come.
“The team ball goes to Jadon Seibel for his strong mental play. His match could’ve gone the other way if he hadn’t kept his focus and played within himself. He refused to let his match get away.
“The guys are getting match hardened and playing with greater confidence each week.”
Port Angeles (3-2, 4-2) visit Chimacum on Monday.
