PORT ANGELES — Port Angeles boys tennis secured a solo hold on first place with a 4-3 win over North Kitsap in a matchup of the Olympic League’s two unbeaten squads on Monday.
The Riders took the top two singles matches and No. 2 and No. 4 doubles to secure the win.
“Playing against North is such a challenge because they are always so deep. We felt like we matched up well with them this year and this is a huge win for our team,” said Roughriders coach Brian Gundersen.
Nathan Basden at No. 2 singles and the doubles duo of Zak Alton and Elijah Flodstrom were Gundersen’s picks as players of the match.
“We knew going in that this match was going to be close and for Nathan as a singles player and Zak and Elijah as a doubles team to overcome losing the first set and still come back to win…that obviously made the difference today,” Gundersen said.
Port Angeles (4-0) hosts Kingston today.

Volleyball Jackson 3, Sequim 0
SEQUIM — The Sequim volleyball team lost 3-0 (25-15, 25-19, 25-21) against Jackson, a 4A school from Mill Creek.
Despite Monday’s loss, coach Jennie Webber-Heilman said it was team’s best blocking match of the year as a team with 16 stuff blocks. Kendall Hastings led the Wolves with seven blocks.
The Wolves served 88 percent as a team. Webber-Heilman said she wants Sequim to improve to at least 90 percent.
Hastings also had six kills, 10 digs and served 12-for-12 with a pair of aces. Jolene Vaara had six assists, five kills, six assists, five digs and two blocks.
Sammie Bacon served 5-for-5 with four kills and three blocks. Sydney Clark had seven assists and served 8-for-10. Sydney Hegtvedt served 11-for-11 with two aces and six digs, while Jordan Kidd served 9-for-10 with three aces and five digs.
Sequim (1-1, 1-2) hosted Olympic (1-1, 1-4) on Tuesday in an Olympic 2A League match after press deadline, then play at North Kitsap (2-0, 3-1) on Thursday.
