ANACORTES — The Port Angeles baseball team, with most of its roster intact from last year’s league-champion squad, got its season off to a doubleheader split against Anacortes and Burlington-Edison.
The Roughriders beat Anacortes 6-2, but lost after a rough first inning to Burlington-Edison 12-1.
“I felt that our hitters had great timing for the first time out and we put some really good swings on balls,” said coach Karl Myers.
Ethan Flodstrom went 2 for 3 with a double, two runs scored, two RBIs and a stolen base, while Lucas Jarnigan also had a double and an RBI. Milo Whitman had a hit, a run, and an RBI.
A quartet of Roughrider pitchers — Brody Merritt, Timothy Adams, Hayden Woods and Seth Scofield — didn’t give up a single earned run and struck out 13 batters.
“They competed in the zone and challenged hitters,” Myers said.
In the second game against Burlington-Edison, the Riders started off in a deep hole, giving up 11 runs in the first inning. Only four runs in the game were earned, however.
Gavin Guerrero had two hits, while Daniel Basden had a double. Flodstrom had an RBI and Jadon Seibel pitched the final two innings, giving up just one earned run.
“We have a lot of things to work on but for the first weekend out, there are a lot of positives to build off of,” Myers said.
The Riders (1-1) will begin Olympic League 2A Division play at North Mason on Thursday.

ANACORTES — Breaking in a bunch of new players and playing for the first time all year on an actual field, the Port Angeles softball girls began their season with a doubleheader split at Anacortes, getting a very nice performance from one of their new pitchers.
The Roughriders beat Sedro-Woolley 9-2, then lost in the second game in a wild see-saw affair 12-11 to Anacortes.
Coach Randy Steinman said it was the first chance all season the Riders, who are defending league and district champions, had to play on an actual infield. Because of the heavy snow in February and early March, the girls haven’t had a chance all season to take ground balls on an actual infield. They’ve been practicing indoors and in the outfield all season so far.
“We had a lot of new players. I saw a lot of positives. I think things will pan out,” Steinman said.
In the Sedro-Woolley win, Kiana Watson-Charles started her first-ever varsity game on the mound, going five innings and giving up two earned runs on eight hits, three strikeouts and zero walks, beating a team that the Roughriders beat in the state 2A tournament last year. Hope O’Conner wrapped up, pitching the final two innings and giving up no runs and no walks with a pair of strikeouts.
“She [Watson-Charles] worked hard in the offseason, it’s really paid off,” said coach Randy Steinman.
O’Conner was 4-4 with a double, three runs scored and an RBI. Olivia Nevaril had a double and a triple with two RBIs, while Aeverie Politika had two RBIs and Teagan Clark had a double and an RBI.
In the Anacortes game, the Riders got up 5-0, but then fell behind 12-8. They scored three runs in the seventh inning, but it wasn’t enough to catch the Seahawks.
Jada Cargo went 4-4 at the plate with two runs scored and three RBIs, while Nevaril was 2-4 with a double and two RBI. Politika had a triple and two runs scored. Zoe Smithson was 2-3 with a walk and two runs scored, while Watson-Charles had a double, a run scored and an RBI. O’Conner added a hit, two runs, two RBIs and two walks.
The Riders (1-1) will play at White River on Thursday.

Boys soccer
Sequim 0, Ballard 0
SEQUIM — The Sequim soccer boys began their new season with a 0-0 draw with 3A Ballard in a match that both teams nearly scored in.
Ballard controlled much of the action early, said Wolves’ coach Dave Brasher, getting six shots in the first half, including one off the crossbar and another off the post. Meanwhile, the Wolves got off seven shots in the second half, with a goal disallowed because the ref ruled that the ball had crossed the endline just before a crossing pass in front of the goal.
“It was a little choppy on both sides,” Brasher said. “Both teams had a few kids who didn’t have the 10 practices. We had a few fresh faces.”
One of the Wolves’ returning stars, Ryan Tolberd, had the header goal that was disallowed.
Playing in goal was a newcomer, Jordan Hurdlow. He had four saves in his first varsity match, picking up the shutout.
Three freshmen also played their first varsity matches for the Wolves — Kristian Mingoy, Christian Gonzalez and Ethan Knight.
The Wolves have Tolberd, Rudy Franco and Adrian Funston back from last year’s 14-6-2 squad that led the
Olympic League 2A with 79 goals, but will have to replace the scoring punch from all-time Sequim leading scorer Liam Harris, who graduated, and Hayuk Minano, who was a Spanish exchange student. The Wolves have a new exchange student this season, Mathys Tanche from Belgium.
“Overall, I was satisfied with the draw. It could have gone either way,” said Brasher.
