BAINBRIDGE — The Port Angeles girls picked up a number of second-place finishes going up against top 3A and 2A relay teams at the Spartan Relays at the Bainbridge Island Aquatic Center.
Competing at the relays were 3A schools Bainbridge, Holy Names and North Thurston, and defending 2A state champion North Kitsap, 2A Port Angeles and 2A Sehome, which was fourth in the state last year.
The Port Angeles girls held their own, coming in fourth out of the six teams with 28 points, beating Sehome (26) and North Thurston (20) and not far behind North Kitsap (35). Bainbridge, a 3A swimming power that was fourth in the state championships last year, won with 73 points.
Port Angeles finished second in five out of the 18 varsity and JV relay events.
Finishing second was the Roughriders 400 freestyle relay team of Felicia Che, Elise Mann, Kiara Schmitt and Mackenzie DuBois with a time of 4 minutes, 2.38 seconds, just behind Bainbridge’s first-place time of 4:00.19.
The Riders’ 200 backstroke relay of DuBois, Sage Hunter, Schmitt and Kenzie Johnson finished second with a time of 2:00.79, again, beaten only by a Bainbridge relay team that had a time of 1:59.76.
Port Angeles’ 200 butterfly relay (DuBois, Emma Murray, Johnson, Che) finished third with a time of 1:56.80.
In JV races, the Riders’ 200 breaststroke relay team of Sophia Murray, Grace Possinger, Hannah Sugg and Alyssa Weed finished second at 3:10.18. Port Angeles’ JV 200 freestyle relay (Rachel Cooper, Sophia Murray, Emilee Reid, Anne Edwards) finished second at 2:07.01 and the Riders’ JV 400 individual medley relay (Possinger, Emma Lindberg, Sophia Murray, Leia Kenton) finished second at 6:09.77.
The Riders next swim at Sequim at 3 p.m. Thursday.
Cross Country Forks at Ocosta Invitational
OCOSTA — Forks’ Madelyn Archibald won the Ocosta Invitational Cross Country Meet, winning by a margin of more than 30 seconds over second place.
Archibald won Saturday’s race with a time of 21 minutes, 22.59 seconds. Coming in third was her Spartans teammate Karen Ensastegui with a time of 21:59.05.
For the boys, the Forks team came in second with 34 points. Mark Morris won with 21 points (Like golf, the lower the score, the better in cross country scoring). Onalaska was third with 73 points.
the top Forks time was by Wesley Camacho, who came in third with a time of 17:09. Freshman William Perez of Forks finished seventh with a time of 17:43.
